Lucy took this photo last week at frimley Farm near Okotoks, Alberta.
Anyone know exactly the type of bird this is? I don't remember seeing one with the these markings. Is it a type of partridge?

That is most defiantly a Chukar and they are tasty. Too bad my son and his dog weren't there he is becoming a good shot and handling the dog very well.

So it says the Chukar Partridge is not native to North America(but neither are the pheasants in our area) so are the Chukars common?

Not sure how many wild ones are around. I am sure there are some, but they are used in Field Trials a lot. They are easy to raise, smaller then Pheasants, but larger then quail. I raised some for training the dogs. They are from Asia.

We have Hungarian Partridge in our neck of the woods. Your friend looks a touch smaller than the Hungs.  Never seen as many this winter with the above normal temps, but last winter we had a couple of flocks and about 50 pheasants that ripped the heck out of a bunch of straw bales. Since we seeded more grass down we see a lot more birds.

We have a lot of "wild" chuckars here in SE Oregon.  They do really well in the rim rocks / desert country.  They are famous for "laughing" or "chuckling" at hunters when hunting them.  Walk clear up the hill, they laugh and fly to the bottom and vise verse.  Fun to hunt and great eating.

yep it is a chukar... probably a pen-raised bird... when we have released them they end up sitting on equipment or the house until the hawks pick them off

My late Uncle had a saying " The first time you hunt Chukar it is for fun, the rest of your life you hunt them for revenge."
