I have been digging through this site for days trying to soak up as much info as possible. You have a wonderful group here everyone so willing to share. (clapping)

My question is: Where else would someone go to learn how to get started showing? (ie: books, videos, sites, etc.)

A little background on me so you know where I'm coming from.

I was not raised on a farm, never lived near one. The only animal I ever had was a dog. My husband was raised on a dairy so he knows about cows, but swore to never go back.
Now our daughter (12 almost 13) wants to show really bad, has been asking for several years now. My FIL raises reg. black angus and has generously offered to "give" her a heifer.
We have a nice place to keep her, but now what?  ???

Our ag teacher is willing to help, but I would like for her and I to learn as much as possible.

Thanks in advance. :)

You came to the right group.
If it were me, I would find someone local that also shows or you trust. Travel to as many shows that you can and soak up the info. When we started back a few years ago we had been absent for a while. SO ...we went to as many shows as we could. Talked to people and met alot of nice people.
Grooming- Stierwalt video would be very helpful. Sold at Sullivan supply.
There are alot of folks on here with LOTS of good experience.

(welcome) South!

There are several fairly good articles on the front page dealing w/ hair care, feeding, helping out a timid shower & breaking a calf. Check them out at www.steerplanet.com Most are under articles.

Also find a mentor who you can watch, learn from & is willing to help out. Get a showing/ fitting video. I hear stiewalt's have some great ones. If there are clinics near you, enroll.

Just be patient, have fun & go w/ the flow!

Also know that no question is dumb here!!!

I have been out of the show ring for 20 years and have had lots of help from people on this site. I have had some very  basic questions and everyone is very helpful.

Good Luck,

That is exactly where we started, husband grew up on a farm, I was in town and neither of us had ever shown.  We went to the American Royal sale, bought 2 heifers and the full set of Steirwalt videos and never looked back.  I would suggest you set some realistic goals with her on how serious she is about doing this, that will make a difference in what your investment will be.

Thank you for the warm welcome.

Doc, We live in NE Texas.

Our daughter has been asking for about 3 years now to show. I was going to try to get her started last year but our younger daughter got
seriously ill which put a screeching halt on all plans we had. She is doing better now and our oldest has been extremely patient but is really ready to get started. We have been trying to point out all the hard work that it will take to  and most of the negative to her, just to see how she reacts and shes serious about wanting to do this. Her best friend has just now started showing so she's a little more anxious now about getting started.

I have been searching for videos and was trying to find some reviews on the Stierwalt clinics or videos, or the Dan Dvorak Calf Training 101 video. Any opinions on those?

Again thanks for the welcome. :)

I highly recommend Stierwalt clinic and video, have never heard of the other one.  If there is a clinic that is anywhere near you I would go that route, it took us 15 years to get to one and I think it is probably the best money we ever spent.
