Zulu calves (Updated)

A couple of Zulu calves.  Both are out of full sisters, Big Jake daughters out of a Primo cow.  Both sired by Zulu. 

Nice calves. What causes all the ear?

The top one looks a lot like Zulu as calf! We had a yearling bull by Zulu that went in a group of 4 to a large commercial herd this spring.

One of the measures of success of my herd bulls has always been the percentage of bull calves they sire that I would be happy with as a replacement for their sire.  There are several Zulu bull calves that would look good as a 4 year old running in my pasture.  (Not that I want anything to happen to Zulu to make that necessary)  The heifers are pretty much peas in a pod and I'm really looking forward to getting them into production.  The fall calving group will start in a couple weeks.  Now I just have to figure out what to breed his daughters to, including the fall heifers from last year. 

Not sure how to reply to the "ear" question other than some lines my have bigger ears than others.  I guess I really haven't noticed these ears to be any bigger than normal.  Maybe my cattle have bigger ears so they can better hear me start up the tractor to feed them hay in the winter. 

I have a few ideas at least on the white one-but they are newer low bw deals other than Lazy D HL Quane or GB Daybreak Express.The best son of Deertrail Awsome and arguably one of the best commercially oriented Shorthorn bulls who is still in use 24 years after he appeared is Byland Dazzler. He was stout, big footed-VERY LEVEL HIPPED,and is also the sire and grandsire of 2 National Champs-K-Kim Dazzler, and TM Dazzler:along with a number of famous cows. The Awesome son with by far the most calves born anywhere would have been Byland Explosian-who was exported to Australia as a calf-His dam is the MATERNAL grandam of the white hiefer:who I bought in 1991. Daybreak Express is BY FAR-the best Byland Dazzler son JMO-with lincoln red,maine, and Quane in the background, hes got some size,hes thick,a documented low bw with epds,and would just work with that cow family.And-they are also deep-ribbed-Zulu does put some daylight under some of them,along with a great look and muscle pattern. O0

How old are they. They almost look snakey gutted?

Bull calf is very late March, heifer calf is mid-April.  The bull calf has good depth, the heifer calf could be a little deeper, but she'll mature all right.  You have to remember I still take pictures from almost ground level like we did 30 years ago.  Next time I'll put them in 16 inches of straw instead of on concrete.  They had their first opportunity at creep feed about 10 days ago and are starting to hit it pretty good.

I really like my Zulu heifers and as they mature they keep getting better! I wish we had used him another year.  The attached are two of them (the one in the sunset is mine and the other is Okotoks')

I have some more recent photos of my 2015 Zulu calves, but I'm having computer troubles at home.  I think you'll be impressed with how they've developed over the past 2 months.  Very happy with them and also with the new fall calves.  I'll get them posted ASAP.

They have came a long way.  early pictures of just weaned calves is tough deal.  I like the heifer what is her mother?

Calves are full genetic sibs.  Maternal grandsire is Oakview Big Jake 708TPx (Trump X CF Equity Fool 88), next maternal grandsire is CF Primo, next in line is 4D Double Trouble.  Triple clean as Zulu, Big Jake, and maternal granddam all tested clean for all three defects.  Reg # of heifer:  4217888, bull calf:  4217880.  I have 5 fall Zulu heifers calves so far that look outstanding.  One is a dead ringer for the spring heifer calf already pictured.  I'll get photos on as soon as I can. 

This wont be the best one at Oakviews by a longshot-but my breeding-seems to be pretty stout for a baby O0

That's a pretty good Zulu X Dorothy heifer calf.  Bert Moore stopped by a week ago and looked at the calves and seemed to like the fall calves.  I've got 5 outstanding fall heifers by Zulu, but I've got to kind of keep them hidden.  The grandkids don't seem to think I should sell any of them!

I like your calf Mark, nice to get a heifer out of Dorothy!
Here is as April yearling by Zulu, she is not quite as expressive as most of his calves but she is very nice and out of a top producing cow. She has a little bit of linebreeding going on at 5.2% where I am guessing yours and Oakview's are basicly outcross matings.

Thanks -complete outcross-This is Dorothy last year and her white hiefer by Zulu last year as well: Dorothys dam is all conventional O0 and sired by an Equity son of Huberdale Pm Lora-Dorothy is a free For All-very moderate -but very Ez keeping and stout.
