    Pregnant First Time Heifer

We use the body condition score  guide published by North Dakota St. Extension as our feeding guide. ( it is on the internet) This guide is for cows but it will also work for heifers.  You need to evaluate the amount of  fat on the back, ribs and tail head. If your animal is to fat you will have...

    Fellow Hereford Breeders!

I saw a Redeem bred heifer that was an excellent female. She had  plenty of mass and muscle. She was a show heifer so I would guess she was well fed. I also saw a Redeem cow with calf at side the cow was a little on the thin side. She looked like a hard keeper but I do not know how she was feed...

    Fellow Hereford Breeders!

My pick would be the Stud bull. Most complete bull of the  three. I have seen Redeem cattle and they are quality cattle. My concerns with the bull are calving ease and the cost at $100 per straw.  He was bred by Churchill Cattle Co. people who have produced a lot of good cattle. I suggest you...

    winter groomig

What would be the best comb and brush to use for winter grooming? Right now our 4-H calves have a small amount of dead hair. I do not need a shedding comb.I just have a small amount of dead hair to remove. I am thinking a plastic skip tooth scotch comb and a medium size rice roots brush. When it...

    holding management

Holding might not be the right word. More like get them at the right wt. Jan. 1.  If the steer would gain one pound per day we would be ok. One year my son had a steer we thought was 750 lbs and ended up at 850 lbs. on Jan. 1st. Our fair is the last wk in July.  The head of the National...

    holding management

We run into this issue almost every year. In Iowa many good calves are born in the beginning of  March. People want them born before the mud starts. They also like calves born before field work starts  for corn planting. Our problem is many of  the quality calves are big right now. They need...

    Breeding my Hereford/Maine Anjou heifer

I would use a proven bull with good  calving ease and birth weight epds. Study the bull's pedigree and avoid bulls with  bloodlines that have calving problems.  To avoid calving problems do not use big boned bulls. Most clubby bulls  don't have epds.  True Grit and 719T are Hereford bull that...

    fly spray

What fly spray has been successful for you? On  cows in pasture we use a straight undiluted pour on. I f we use anything that gets mixed with water the Iowa  rain and humidity will dilute it. What is a good fly spray for show calves? We use an undiluted  spray for the same reason. Has any one...

I am going to purchase a smaller clippers for our show calves. I have a Lister Star. It's ok but I would like something  smaller and more handy that makes less noise. What clippers do you like? I plan to pay around $150 but would a rebuilt one for $75 be a good value. Thanks for your suggestions.

We have  a second calf, one half Simmental, one half Hereford heifer. She is sired by Built Right. She is a red white face that is a little nervous. She is feminine, clean fronted, and sound on her legs. She needs more spring of rib, a thicker top and shorter legs.My bull choices are--- for...

    best chore tractor

I agree with Justintime the older White we had didn't like to start in the cold. We took  the in block heater out and it was way too small for that size of tractor. My uncle had a MF 85 he didn't like it,he traded for a Ford 5000. He has owned a lot of tractors. The 5000 was his favorite chore...
