    Beef Friesian

I know it's dragging up an older post, but I seen this today and thought it fitted this thread ok. Good example of a beefy type British milking Fresian.

Compton brought a Chute Full to the Cattle Congress

There is nothing on marbling, or tenderness. High fat cover grades would get a reduced price per kilo in the grading characteristics. A lean, muscular carcass is what the commercial producer is aiming for. Hence the prominence of myostatin. The only way for high fat cover to pay is to go through...

Compton brought a Chute Full to the Cattle Congress

What is an acceptable growth rate and weight in North America now? 1900lb is approx 863kg Take away 31kg birthweight (which is tiny by Irish and UK standards) which leaves 832kg at 21 months. That works out at approx 1.3kg weight gain per day. Which is not particularly over the top for beef bred...

    Beef Friesian

This is what I had in mind as an example of a traditional British Friesian. On my hunt for a picture (before I seen yours) I came across this link. http://www.journeytoforever.org/farm_library/turner3/herd-all.htm It has a world of information and I'm sure some of you on here would find it...

What is favorite bull brought to your attention thanks to SP?

Melita Rose 7048. A Theodore daughter, so was hoping it would be a good enough pairing. It was all there was anyway.

What is favorite bull brought to your attention thanks to SP?

To answer the title of the thread, I first seen and learned about Cumberland Gay Lad on here. Really liked him. Managed to get one solitary embryo that was export collected and shipped to Ireland. He has no direct offspring in the UK and Ireland (although a grandson, Lads Legacy, was used here)...

    Beef Friesian

The traditional British Freisians would have started out as dual purpose and in the past the pure breed would have been a lot beefier. Like everything else they have been forced to specialise, whether that is from selecting lighter more milky animals or introducing Holstein. A pure traditional...

    Scottish national winter fair

It was all single carriers I sold. I only have a small herd of 15 cows (have also full time job). So I am down to 8 cows now. Some have went for breeding to a commercial herd as they like the shape. I have one heifer that is a carrier that I am keeping as she has a lot of the attributes that I...

Are Beef Freisians similar to the British Friesian breed?

Some people do use Piedmontese, but they have a bit of catching up to do. For the higher priced show animals F94L wouldn't provide enough muscle or power. https://thatsfarming.com/editors-picks/mcgee-family-sale/ That's from a sale a couple of days ago. As long as the grading system over here...

    Scottish national winter fair

Northern Ireland has a good shorthorn beef scheme. https://www.glenarmshorthornbeef.co.uk/ http://www.hannanmeats.com/our-meat/beef Quite a lot of the shorthorn beef would be sold to the other parts of the UK, including England. London would provide a good market. A good shorthorn steak would...

    Scottish national winter fair

The most common beef breeds in the UK and Ireland are Belgian Blue, Limousin and Charolais. All now generally carry 2 copies of the double muscle gene. Although native breeds are making a bit of a comeback, they would never get a look in at calf shows such as these unless they were double...

The whole grading system in the UK and Ireland is based on muscle confirmation. Double muscle is the winner under this system. Tenderness, IMF, Fat are not considered under the grading system. Double muscle does apparently produce tender beef. Obviously IMF and fat are greatly reduced.
