I am in Idaho on the Idaho/wyoming line. I have a supplier of both and plant both barley and oats. You might check Walton Feed in Montpelier, Idaho they deliver to the Bridger Valley of Wyoming a couple times a month.
I have yet to see a Cyrus that made a good cow. Know a guy that kept 6 heifers, 30 head in the pasture and and all 6 were the last to calve. Only one bred back for a second. None milked well. Total bust as a maternal bull.
I have used a twine from the halter around and under the tail then back to where I can pull it. It isn't as good as having a second person but it is better than nothing.
Market steer class should be about meat in the box in a pretty package. That means big hip, big top, deep round and enough chuck to balance him up. Clean front end and moves out or pretty.
The breed should not matter as you are looking for product. If the judge is getting it right then the...
Nice picture. I love the pig projects. This year one thought it was a dog and would follow my daughter anywhere. He would sit, play dead and give kisses. It was a sad sad day when Powder Keg finished his show career.
I agree the soft middled easy fleshing cattle are usually sound or as Twisted says sound enough. Same show had a judge say that a pig was too deep in the flank. Haven't heard that in the last 5 years. Soft and chubby are as a rule the direction most shows go.
I personally can live with a...
Had a judge in a market goat class say something I wish a market beef judge would say. This goat has power and substance but he is crooked in his legs and has over all poor structure. Obviously it won't effect him on the rail but he has a mother and sisters at home. We can't promote such...
I was not impressed with the trifecta calves I saw just didn't do much for me. I would second the WhiteRooster bulls. He has full brother to Whiplash that looked really good. Whiplash still has some good daughters in production.
Might be just the way she is standing but it looks like she toes out on the back legs. Tight at the hocks and toes out? Might just be my eyes and the picture.
We have a local company (Cache Commodities) that makes a product called Halter Power. It is better than the Honor in my opinion. We have fed both. We cut most the feeds with additional barley, corn and oats. (We raise barley and oats so might as well work them into the ration.) We also feed...
As has been said there are good ones in any breed but the percentages of finding one will go up with the herefords. Had a kid that thought he was a mighty showman and could handle anything. A Friction out of and EXT cow had him begging for mercy. She was pretty but she was nasty!
My sons...
So a dairy steer can be a less expensive project and there are more dairy steers that there are club steers. Tell me again how this is bad? The goal is to involve kids and families and it is bad to have more animals? I see the club calf snobbery all the time. Dairy steers can't compete. ...
