Cow Having Hard Time with Hot Weather

Yes, we have fescue mix, but this started back in April, early May, before the fescue got mature and the cool season grass was plentiful and lush.  And it was comfortable weather.  She is a Man Among Boys, so I'm guessing THC.

Cow Having Hard Time with Hot Weather

We have a 3 year old cow that is really struggling with the 90 degree, high humidity, southern Indiana heat.  She stands in the coolest place she can find, usually in some water, and pants with her tongue out just trying to get all the air in she can.  She's not overly fat, small in size, and we...

    Cow Having Difficulty Urinating

Saw something this evening that has me wondering.  Noticed a cow humped up with her tail over her back trying to urinate.  She was dribbling a little and looked to be prolapsing with a baseball size, red protrusion.  I watched her like this a few minutes, then she took several steps, urinated a...

    Squeeze Chute/Alleyway System

If you have a barn/shelter or can build one, definitely put it under roof.  Especially if you AI or work cattle rain or shine.  It will be easier on you and less stressful for everyone.

    Rye Straw

What is your opinion of Rye straw compared to Wheat for bedding?  is it as absorbent?  Just being used for calving, not tie stalls at shows.

    False Heat??

I know the frustration you're having when you think they're bred having passed over on her 21 day post breeding cycle.  But you say she was bred 6 weeks ago.  So this is her second cycle after breeding (42 days +/-).  One thing that aggravates me to no end is when a cow is showing all the signs...

    TAI Protocols

I contacted an A.I. Tech that does A.I. full time and breeds pretty much all day, every day in the spring.  He likes Cidr and Gnrh, pull Cidr's 8 days later, not seven, give Estrumate for tighter heats when pulling Cidr.  He breeds nursing cows 60 hours after pulling Cidr and Estrumate.  Virgin...

    TAI Protocols

I've been hit with an unfortunate situation and need advice.  My AI tech is injured and can not AI this spring.  We have a few more to go and wonder what is best.  My ABS rep can do it but would like them synced to make one trip (TAI).  Here's the deal on the cows: 2 - were set up for embryo...

    Setting up with CIDR's

I have an idea for 2 late calving first calf heifers.  Can I CIDR but not breed after CIDR protocol and instead Lute 11 days after CIDR heat to get a better chance of a fertile heat?  I doubt they have cycled having calved only three weeks and a month ago.  First calf heifers are harder to...

    Sires for Flushing

Have a very moderate 4X4 cow we might flush since she is getting older.  She's good necked, fairly deep-bodied, sound except a bit bold in the shoulder.  She's still youthful in her appearance and structure.  Looking mainly for females but half could be bulls, so don't want to throw them away as...

    Recent Calved Cow With Runs

Have a cow with squirting runs that calved two days ago.  She's on orchardgrass hay, no clover or alfalfa, no grain.  Any ideas why?  What could I give her?

    Cows' Vulva Expanding

Ten year old cow calved last night unassisted, no prolapsing, cleaned well, all is well.  She wasn't A.I.ed.  Tried to use for a recip but she didn't have a CL on transplant day.  Put clean-up bull in June 5 and removed July 5.  So she must have gotten bred NS right away.  June 5 breeding would...

    Cows' Vulva Expanding

The picture you provided is what I am seeing.  Have seen this other years, just seems earlier than normal from due date.  No straining or pushing, or when standing.  I know cow age has a lot to do with it, but one is only 5.  Could it also be a sign of big calf?

    Cows' Vulva Expanding

Just when they're lying down and I'm sure it is pressure from the fetus.  Don't remember this starting this far before they calve.
