I would not use SG on heifers.  As to OP question, when he hits, they are as good as anything else out there. Our 2014 county champ.

I would feed him wet beet pulp. Heck I would feed wet feed all the way around if he would eat it. Wetter the better!! G-Luck

Be careful using a hose on an open wound.  Depending on the source, some water contains bacteria that can start an infection.  I would follow your Vets orders...
