We have one of each, steel one for the calves first few times in a shoot and aluminum for once they get used to it. The aluminum is more handy for shows by far, much easier to carry around then the metal. We do take both to shows because we usually show 6 calves, and I'm always racing my brother...

For the filler I think it really depends on the calf. I have one this year who loves beet pulp, I know it's odd. We have tried full tank as well with him and I didn't think i got near as good results as I did with beet pulp. On the other hand we did the same thing with a heifer and the full tank...

Why don't you get a theme going with all of your animals and try to come up with something from that, or if you don't have any theme you could go with look at his sire, dam, grandsire or grand dams names and try to come up with something from that

i really don't like wearing them. i can never get them to fit right on my shoulders and the straps fall off in the ring and its just another thing to deal with. i prefer just getting a clip to put in your back pocket or on your belt

I don't see the problem with spitting, especially in the barn. if you got to spit to got to spit. Oh, and swallowing that stuff can damage your esophagus and cause stomach ulcers so don't want to do that. Don't worry about the Ulcers.  The Dipping/Chewing will give you Cancer, which will kill...

if you cant get around to washing him during the winter at least be out there every day with a rice root, fluffer comb, and (my personal preference) a stimulator  comb.
