    steer trouble

Well sounds pretty good.  Hopefully he is not over eating at night, but you would probably have picked up on that connection by now...?  If he were overeating at night I imagine he would have less of an appetite in the morning.  We have a market heifer right now that is really, really picky and...

    steer trouble

We had a TW steer last year.  He weighed less at our weigh in and our fair is the same time.  His appetite was similar, not real aggressive.  He made it just fine.  I am by no means a professional, but just make sure he is getting enough roughage, but not too much, and try and keep him on...

    School me on Cameras

Ditto. I wouldn't go with anything that has a digital zoom.  I have a Canon DSLR and my favorite lens is the 18-200mm.

    Opinions on maine cow?

Wow we have some that look real similar in body type and we are in the same boat.  We have had a hard time finding something that they really click with.  We have always bred pretty conservatively because we always figured it wasn't worth killing a cow to get a calf, but maybe that's where we...

    Heifer Feed Question

AAOK, thank you.  I was hoping you would chime in.  We are diligent with our feed schedule and care and I know that plays a huge roll in outcome.  Thanks again for the info.

    Heifer Feed Question

Thanks for the response.  I have read AAOK's feed mix and it sounds really good it just didn't specifically address heifers that I could recall.  We feed a bagged feed and I kinda know some of the real basics, but just didn't know if there was a certain percentage that people started them on...

    Heifer Feed Question

I have a question about feeding breeding heifers.  What % of their body weight should you be feeding and what should the ration look like.  End goal is to be competitive in the show ring and have a heifer that will settle and not be morbidly obese at the end.

    Hair problems

It seems like the more you can work the poo balls out of their hair the less it will accumulate especially if you can make a clean dry spot for them to bed.  We are in the same boat weather wise and having a clean dry place to lay makes all the difference in the world.

    Big Guns?

I Will share pictures when the calf arrives.  Yes he already has calves on the ground.  They sold a couple nice ones at the Maine sale at the NWSS.  I specifically remember saying "wow I hope ours is that nice".  Fingers crossed.

    Big Guns?

Give me two weeks and I'll let ya know.  I have a cow due to him in about 10 days.

    ocho cinco steer

Like most everyone else I think he looks fine.  He is standing funny like they all do when learning to be on the end of a rope and the dung balls don't help his current appearance, but sometimes that can't be helped.  He just needs feed and time.  Our Fair is end of July and yours being in...

Troubadour, Yellow Jacket or George - who to flush to?

I have seen a few Yellow Jacket's and am actually feeding one now.  The ones I have seen have been out of Maine x Angus Dirty cows. I really love the bone and foot size and how correct they have all seemed in their feet and legs.  What I don't like is the frame size on some of them ( a little on...

    Maine Bull Big Guns

I have a Shorthorn cow bred to him right now.  She is due in about three weeks.  I will let you know how it turns out.

    crazy heifer/long story

I wouldn't hesitate to cover all your bases and if you feel that doing that means getting a written statement from your vet I would do so.  It surely couldn't hurt.  However, it sounds like you are dealing with a professional bunch of folks and things should go well.  Best of luck to you and...

    I 80 X Mossy oak

We have a Mossy Oak cow and I love her.  She is real quiet and one of the best mother cows we have.  We have had a little trouble finding something that really clicks with her genetically, but other than that she is one of my favorites.  Hasn't given us two minutes worth of trouble in the last...

WARNING about posting Facebook pictures of your cattle!

I had trouble with someone using my photos without permission on Facebook also.  If the person has posted the picture on their facebook page without your permission all you have to do is report it to facebook and they will remove the picture or make the person remove the picture.  As for the...

When is it safe to transport a bred cow?

We have always been told to haul right after AI'ing (before the five day mark) or to wait at least 45 days.  We have always followed these guidelines and have had good luck.

What do you do with scurs on a 4-H steer?

If the scurs are still pretty small the vet can do a dehorn and it is relatively simple and heals pretty quick no stitches or big process required (if they are still small).  I would take the time and do it even on a county fair steer.  Don't wait until the weather gets warm.

Heifer that just throws her legs

Maine, I am not a vet.  I actually found out about Spastic Paresis right here on Steerplanet.  Best of luck with your heifer, but it doesn't sound like she has a future.  It is my understanding that Spastic Paresis doesn't go away and it really doesn't get better.  It is also heritable, so you...
