    Gestation date question

We have Maine crosses and we rarely have one calve on the 283 due date.  Usually they are about seven days over that.  We have a Benz x Angus cow and she doesn't look like an Angus.  She is kinda flat haired though.

    Stabilized Rice Bran Problem/Question

We didn't have a problem with bloat while using it, but it did make our steers sick and they went off of feed.  They would eat it for a few days and then get sick and wouldn't eat at all.  We weren't even giving them 8oz.  We tried this for many weeks, before we finally said the heck with it.  I...

Need advice - Breaking a calf

It sounds like you have seen and tried just about everything in your day and so as more of a rookie than yourself I am reluctant to make a suggestion, but here goes.  A good, old timer, friend of ours has always made the suggestion to us to use calf calm and maybe more than you would in a normal...

    what is your worst mating?

Ok the worst one we have had probably ever is a Maverick out of an old Tequila cow.  This cow has always had some pretty decent calves.  The thing is a dang race horse and real hard made.  It was a big dummy as a new calf.  It has an awkward looking walk and a jug head.  It is fairly thick made...

    Steer attitude

It sounds like he is behaving at home a majority of the time which I think is half the battle.  Just keep working at home doing all the things Frostback mentioned; wash, blow, tie, stick and repeat....  Before we take our cattle out for the first time every year we give them a hefty dose of calf...

    Dead hair question

There is a tool on page 178 of the March/April edition of the Showtimes Magazine.  They call it the "Shedding Comb".  It has a website listed on the ad ( www.thewinnersbrand.com ).  I haven't used it and have no idea if it will work, but it is another idea.

    Amen

J, I saw your calf on another thread and he is nice.  I am anxious to see what kind of a cow he is out of.  What size babies does this cow typically have?  Is she a carrier?  We have a bunch of clean cows and I am wondering if it would click.  Guess all we can do is try.  Nice calf!

Topic for DL or someone equally as genius! (Bloat)

First she was 9 weeks old.  Her ration consisted of milk, good grass hay (not much as she just picked at it) and maybe 1/2lb of a complete feed/day (which is all she would eat).  The funny thing is she always acted totally normal until she got out and ran.  She did cough some, but not enough to...

Topic for DL or someone equally as genius! (Bloat)

We had a calf (bottle baby) that would bloat after we let her out of her pen and she ran around.  If we let her out prior to eating in the evening she usually did fine, but anytime post eating even four hours or so after she would still get an acute onset of bloat and this most recent time she...

    Ivomec on show cattle

We use Ivermectin on our show calves, BUT we only use it in months that end with an "R".  Iin the other months (which would be now) we inject them.  The Ivermectin has ALWAYS made our red hided cattle get scaly and it doesn't go aways very fast.  We don't get much if any of an injection site...

    Pickups

We have always been a Ford family, but my husband had enough the last time his left me stranded with a trailer full of horses.  He is a diesel mechanic and looked at and researched the new Ford's, Chevy's, GMC's and the Dodge's.  The Dodge is what he settled on and we have had it now for three...

    TH / PHA

Thank you all for your comments.  TwistedH...thank you and I your information it is much appreciated.  I guess I have some thinking to do in regards to whether I am willing to take that next step.  However, I know one thing we will never be breeding carriers to carriers because for me that just...

    TH / PHA

Ok nobody brow beat me for asking this question, but how much does breeding to a TH or PHA carrier change things in terms of size and BW of the resulting calves.  I know and understand how TH and PHA occur and all the specifics when it comes to that.  We have clean females and have never bred to...

    Rodgers-Deadliest Catch

Wow that is confusing to have two Herf Marked bulls with the same name.  When I saw the Rodgers display in the yards and then noticed that this one wasn't in the same area it made me wonder for a half a second.  Hmm well I told ya I wasn't paying attention...
