    Failed Breeding

Last year my show heifer came into heat, so she was hand bred to one of our bulls, and then came into heat every 3 weeks after that.  My vet says that every once in a while that happens with heifers. So I would recommend pregchecking her to make sure that she isn't actually bred, and just...

    New Rope Halters - Slippery!

I got a bunch of brand new Weaver rope halters, but they are really slippery, and they wont stay tight under their jaw.  What do you do to get that waxy texture off?

    Bad Udders

I as well do not want to point fingers, and this is JUST MY OPINION.. People breeding specifically for show heifers or steerss, utter quality isn't that high on the list of priorities.  I think this happens a little more often in the United States because at the purebreds shows as well, it's...

    Blow dry after rinsing?

I have heard a lot of mixed opinions regarding this, so I would love to have a topic dedicated just to this. I was told that you should always blow them, but now I'm hearing that it's better to rinse for 15-30 minutes, and then just brush them a bunch under the fans, and brush and blow in a...

    Steer chewing on halter

I have a steer this year who has been chewing on his halter, so much so, that he has almost chewed right through it.  He is getting all of his vitamins and mineral, so I can't see that being the problem, I am guessing it's just a bad habit.  Anyone have any ideas for me, that could help him...

    Crazy Calf Characteristics

A few crazies I've seen, or had friends see: -A calf that had a tail growing out of where his testicles would have been, and he had no back bone. (was dead by the time we pulled him) -A calf born with no eyes.  But he didn't even have eye sockets, the bone was solid where his eyes should have...

    New at showing....

Another piece of advice when using this website.  If you are looking for quick answers, try searching for your question in the search bar, a lot of questions have already been asked, and then you don't have to wait around for answers.

    2005 Fort Worth Stock Show

I found an article saying that in 2005, the father of the girl who won Grand Champion Steer was sued by the Fort Worth Stock Show?  Does anyone know what went on here?

    Size of a calving pen????

10 X 10 is what we do, you don't really wanna go any smaller than that. Ours all usually come in (because it is around -10C to -30C) for 12 hours max, just until the calf is cleaned off, standing and sucking, and then they are turned out.  Then we also have a maternity pen in the barn for if we...

    Semen Prices on New Bulls

Personally, I don't care if the semen is $20 or $200, odds are, I am probably not going to buy semen on an unproven bull.  I would much rather wait until the next year, see some calves and then decide.  For me, the price of semen is so miniscule in comparison to the cost of raising a show calf...

    Ringworm in feedlot calves

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it too much.  Our entire pen of replacement heifers usually gets it over then winter.  They get over it, and are perfectly fine, just takes a bit for the hair to grow back in.
