    city folk and weaning

My personal favorite is when people tell me that show cattle are abused.  Are you kidding me!? They are spoiled!  They eat before we eat, and are literally pampered. I think what bugs me the most is that people don't take the time to understand OUR sides of the story, they hear about one...

    Hay Prices in your area

Well my place is three hours from "town", and on a year like this for us, we are looking at about $100/ton including delivery.  But on other years when we don't have as much hay, we are looking at around $130.

    Ever seen this before??

My favorite is the good ol nail in the end of a stick as a show stick.

I don't understand why; Can someone please explain ? !

Well since most of the solid black ones are dyed as well (I do it to cover up the red tinge in the hair of my black calf), I personally can't tell the difference between the ones that are just dyed to make them JET black, and the ones that are dyed to cover up the white.

    Progress VS Prospect Steer

oh okay, so that was why I was confused, I thought they had a banner from two different things, when really it was just two different judges.  Thank you for clearing that up.

    Filler ?

I know at Agribition in Saskatchewan in 2010, a Charolais died shortly after leaving the show ring from being pumped full of ginger ale or beer, I can't remember what it was.

I don't understand why; Can someone please explain ? !

Just one thing to take into consideration, a lot of people who have black calves that have white bellies, flanks, or any markings, will just dye the animal completely solid black.

    Progress VS Prospect Steer

But a lot of the calves were in BOTH categories?

    Steer Fitting

Definitely agree with Zack, if you are new to it, the best thing you can do is watch the pros and ask lots of questions in order to understand why they are doing things a certain way.  What works for one animal won't necessarily work for another.

    Progress VS Prospect Steer

I was looking through the Belt Buckle Bonanza winners, and I am a little confused as to what is the difference between a progress steer and a prospect steer?  And why could one animal beat another in the Prospect category, but then come in opposite positions in the Progress category?

    Professional Fitters

I'm up in Canada, and at my junior shows, the only people aloud to TOUCH the animals are juniors.  They can't have adults feeding, walking, washing, fitting, showing, NOTHING!  But of course, I know kids that are 18 and can fit as good as some of the pros, and that's just the way it is.  My...

    Opinions on a shorthorn steer

He's a really nice steer for a pb, he's nice and stout with loads of thickness.  I can't quite tell from the picture, but I think I'd like to drop him down in the twist a bit.

Weird Question but, What are tail ties for?

Another think that they can be used for is if they are really bad for sticking their tail up. If every time you use the show stick to make them drop it, they keep putting it up, it can help because it will numb the tail and so they won't lift it.

    Cheap Show Steer. Opinions?

Could you post a picture of him from his side so I could get a good look at him?

    Obstacle course

If I were put in this position, I would definitely not want to risk injuring an animal that I have put hundreds of hours and dollars into just for a game.  Also, putting that much stress on them (from people running around and pushing them and yelling) is probably not the best idea right before...

Barnz - Episode 1 - Gray Show Cattle

I love the idea of the post in the pens, where you tie their head up to the panel and then its perfect for blowing! They are restricted for movember but you dont have the pain in the butt of a clipping chute getting in the way!  Beautiful facilities, thank you for the video!

The resurrection of the 1980's simmentals

Oh gosh, I hope not.  I was looking at one of my old pictures from about 15 years ago, one of my champion females, and thinking what would happen if I showed up with the same cow today at a show.

    Naming Breeding Cattle

I breed Hereford cattle as well, and I like to start off with a prefix, or something that shows who has bred the animal.  Then I add the sire of the calfs number, followed by the calfs name and then the calfs tag number.  For the name, some people like to put miss and then the name, so it's easy...
