What class do you show your Shorthorn Plus in? AOB, Shorthorn, or cross

Here, if there are enough Shorthorn Plus (number varies from show to show, usually minimum of 3-6), then they would have a class of their own, if not, it is based on their sire.  If their sire was a Cross, they'd be cross, if their sire was mostly one breed or another, then they'd go into that...

    Breaking a calve to lead

One of the biggest things I find is to give them lots of slack, and then start pulling and slowly increase the pressure, as soon as they step forward at all (whether is be 2 steps or only an inch forward with one foot), give them lots of slack, and then repeat it.  Try not to pull really hard...

Opinions - Biggest problem facing the cattle industry?

I'm interested to see what everyone thinks will be the biggest problem/challenge facing the cattle industry in the near future? Whether you are in the ranching business, the purebred business or the club calf business? Whether you are a breeder, fitter or just a hired hand? What do you have a...

    Opinions on young show persons

I have been showing by myself since I was 5 years old, but it was in open shows with my families animals.  I think in 4H, it's not as much about the safety, but just that in 4H, the idea is to buy and raise your own animal, and get to understand the business, and a 5 year old isn't going to be...

    some of our show heifers

I remember what it was like when i first started showing cows. I think its awesome for kids to get ito it, they really get to learn about responsibilty and it gives you a great sense of accomplishment.  Hope they do well with their heifers!

    Houston livestock show

I dont and CANT agree or disagree with anything said here because i dont know enough about it, but i just though I'd share something that might shed some light on how lucky i think these kids are, even to be walking away with 75K (more than what the average adult makes in an entire YEAR of...

    Tiny calf

My grandpa had a 14-Pound calf.  I dont know the full story because it was before i was born, it set the world record, but he didnt realize until it was about a week old and by then he had grown, and so they were never able to register it as the record setting calf.  Right now, we have a calf...

    1st calf of the year!!

What is the breeding on that cow? Did her dam have an udder like that as well? And I can agree with what you guys have been saying, my smallest cow (only about 1050-1100 lbs, only kept her because of her breeding and to see if she grew), had a super small tight udder, and had a 76 lb calf that...

    Ringworm Question

In November, I was at a show and I was working with some cattle that had ringworm. I'd never had ringworm, so just as I suspected, I got ringworm shortly after.  The girl I was working for said that she'd had ringworm before, so she wouldn't get it again from cattle. My question is, is ringworm...
