    Judging Aids.....

I'll have to bring this up to our local judging team coach too!  Our 4-h team won state this year--they probably need some new challenges before the national competition.  Maybe I'll set them out a class of pumpkins when they visit our farm! (lol)

    Show Awards

I was talking to the Mom of one of the herdsman winners after the awards banquet this year.  She and her daughter were very excited about the chair her daughter won this year and she was telling me that her daughter had won an embroidered duffel  bag a couple of years before at the jr. livestock...

The best Breed for a young showman

I've always thought Herefords were best for young showmen too, even though we have raised Angus for many years and now Shorthorns.  But, on the other hand, the meanest cow I've ever come across was a Hereford!  I've had Angus that would follow you around like a puppy dog and some I decided it...

    Show Awards

Our Livestock Association awards directors chairs with the show and award embroidered on them to the herdsman award winners at out junior livestock show.  They seem to really like them. Plus they bring them back to the show the next year and other kids see them and want to win one.

    Now what?

Anytime you change feeds you want to do it slowly (whether its grass to grain or one type of grain to another).  Start with small amounts and work up to full feed.  If he has never eaten grain before it might help to have another calf that's used to eating grain in the pen with him for a few...

Im new here and need advice

Like TGCC said take your time and be calm.  Take a little time to "make friends" before jumping into halter breaking.  I like to start halter breaking in the alleyway to our squeeze chute.  I halter and tie calves in the alley so they can't throw a big fit but they can pull on the halter a...

For our county fair the junior livestock exhibitors have a meeting a couple of weeks before the fair.  At the meeting, the 4-H agent hands out preprinted invitations that include some basic info about the projects (what the kids spend on average and what the average prices have been in the sale...

    Myty in Focus

If you're trying to stick with ABS, look at Hoover Dam or Kessler's Frontman.  I had two first calf heifers bred to Hoover Dam that calved with no issues and the calves grew really well.  I havent calved out any Frontman calves, but I bought a Frontman heifer this Spring that I really like. ...

    Mineral Feeders

No. There's nothing on these feeders to catch an eartag on.  They don't have a metal frame like some of them do.  Just a solid plastic bottom, with a short rod in the center that holds the rubber flap on.

    Mineral Feeders

My favorite feeders that we have are the Sioux Ground Feeders.  http://www.siouxsteel.com/index.php/product-detail/ground-mineral-feeder We got ours from our Vita Ferm dealer (they have the VF logo on the side).  The cows can't flip them over and they hold 150 lbs of mineral easily.
