    Rotaional Grazing

Polywire is the only way to fly for building those small paddocks. Mine are 1 -1.5 acres and handle about 10-12 pairs plus a couple heifers on a 3-day rotation as long as soil fertility is good, there's a decent stand of grass, and it rains enough.  This time of year you can rotate through in...

    Soon-to-be orphaned calf

I wanted to thank everyone for the comments and tell the rest of the story. It was a couple of days until we got the calf in. She was making a living from what she could steal from a couple other cows, but her#1  adopted mom is the thinnest cow out there, and we weren't too thrilled about the...

    Soon-to-be orphaned calf

I realize and appreciate the plethora of experience here, and I'd like to tap a little of it. Situation Cow that freshened about 10 days ago was diagnosed with listeriosis this evening. I'm going to put her down in the morning. Still trying to decide what to do with the calf. Possibility #1. ...

    My students thank you!

I'm  am in the throes of teaching a meat animal growth and development course to about 125 college animal science majors. These students don't know it, but they owe a debt of gratitude to a couple of folks on this board for unwittingly providing some great class material.  Specifically, the...

    Would you fudge on age?

This thread hit home.  After 6 total calves, one of my daughter's 2 cows FINALLY had a heifer calf for her to show as a bred and owned.  Snazzy little blaze faced Hard Core - On February 27.  It'll be registered as a February, but why that cow couldn't have held onto it for another 36 hours is...

    I hate SKUNKS!!!!

Couldn't sleep and this post got me remembering this story... Early last summer we frequently saw a possum at the cat food dish in the garage.  As soon as you’d turn on the light, he’s scamper behind something and undoubtedly return when the light went out to consume his nightly 3 pounds of cat...

    K&A amtrack

Puzzles me he doesn't show up on any iists.  I sure hope he's clean, and he should be if Bremer bred him.  Still have an Amtrack cow here and a few straws of semen if I ever need to make cattle big again.  Amtrack has great EPDs.
