    Sure Champ vs Grand 4Tfyer

For several years we have mixed our feed using AAOK's ration and added Vita firm Sure Champ. This year our Co-op is suggesting using Grand 4Tfyer with our grain and hulls. Just wondering if one is better than the other? Anyone tried both?

    Mixing My Own Feed

I'm in south central Texas.  Just compared prices on AAOK's ration and a similar ration using the Grand 4Tfyer.  AAOK's ration is  $3 less a hundred.  You just have to get a price from your local mill to compare.

    Breeding a heifer. Help!!

We have always bred at 15 mos. to calve at 24 mos..  It's always worked for us running charolais and char cross cattle.  About 3 yrs. ago we purchased a Brahman heifer for my daughter to show.  The breeder instructed us not to breed her until 24 mos..  My husband - knowing better  ::)  opted...

    i-80 females

I'm excited to see what our I-80 heifer produces - She is very thick and stout made so am expecting some killer bull/steer calves out of her......assuming she will get bred!  I will keep you updated.

How do you feed your show calves; On the ground or raised trough?

Just wondering if there is a benefit to either?  I hear people talk about affecting the calves' backs if you feed them on the ground, but don't they graze their entire lives?  So, opinions: feed in pan/trough on the ground, or raised trough?

    Something to worry about?

If it's fluid, my experience is that it will only get worse with weight.  If this is a young calf, I would find another one.  Sometimes they start walking stiff due to the fluid build up.  I have heard of people draining it before a show, but it usually comes back.  JMO

    Question about Feeding Show heifers

For several years we have fed AAOK's ration for show steers and loved it!  It worked very well for us!  Our kids then started showing heifers two years ago.  Using the same ration, the heifers seemed to get too fat.  If I remember correctly his ration is 60% corn.  A breeder recently told us to...

    Three heifers - opinions please

Sizzler - here is another picture of the top heifer. We are definitely having a tough time deciding - but need to make a decision soon. Thanks for your comments. Definitely food for thought.

    Three heifers - opinions please

Any other opinions?  The solid black heifer is really thick made with a big butt.  She will show as a breeding heifer.  I just don't want to get too stout and look more market than breeding.  I'm still not sure if we should put more emphasis on bone and stoutness over femininity.  We have a...

My daughter is trying to decide between these two heifers. Both are Smoking Bob daughters low % Chi.  Opinions appreciated.

    Fattening Steer

Stabilized Rice Bran - puts nice smooth finish on them fairly quickly.  I get mine at Tractor Supply - it's packaged for horses.

    Showmanship Profile Stance

I teach my kids to walk them into the stance by watching the front feet.  When you stop them on the front left coming down, they should be perfect.  The kids turn and walk the last one to two steps backward so they can stop the calf at the right time.  With practice the calves start anticipating...

Making a steer wider through the back

NUBZ - Do you mean wider across the top of the back or making his butt wider?  A lot has to do with genetics and their true potential.  You can help with finish and muscle.  For his butt - I have heard people say walk them a lot especially up and down a hill.  At 800 lbs he is still pretty...

    HELP! Halter breaking stubborn calf

Not much help for this year, but for the future.  My son was in the same boat as you - he played football, dad's job involves a lot of travel, and as the mom, I helped out as much as I could.  The rule was that he had to have his calf really broke before he started two a days.  Then once...

    Steer needs to be heavier

Definitely add the Stab. Rice Bran.  That will put a nice cover on him fairly quickly.  If you add too much too quick, he will get the runs.  Just back off and slowly increase again when he returns to normal.  The Beet pulp or cotton seed hulls for expanding his gut will help also.  You can get...

    Calf with kicking problem...

I have tied them up and sprayed that leg with water from a hose.  Let them kick until they can't kick anymore.  They will realize that it's not hurting and stop kicking.  This will take several days, give or take - depending on the calf.  I have also "brushed" them with a long handled broom...
