One of our junior herd sires

JIT....I think the only way the show ring will move in that direction (more realistic body condition) is if Roger Hunsley and all the other judges on the "A" list get their heads together and make it happen. Once they start punishing exhibitors for over fitting then the trend will begin and the...

    Halter Breaking Problem

Rackranch...I completely agree with your logic; you can really injure an animal if you use brute force to halter break them. What we have done is exactly what you suggest; try to gently lead them to feed and make it a positive experience in as much as that's possible. They all have unique...

    Shadybrook online sale

I agree that we will likely see another good online Shorthorn sale or two in the future based on the proven success of last night. Some of us did have the advantage of being able to personally witness at least some of the offering a few days prior to the sale at the RAWF. That definitely made it...

    Shadybrook online sale

JIT....he's gone. Was only used only one breeding season and no matter how hard I tried to sell him privately I couldn't get him traded. To be fair, he was quite sick as a baby calf; lost his recipient mother and so on. Due to this, he ended up as a chronic bloater if fed concentrates but it was...

    Shadybrook online sale

A poor picture of the Dam of Champagne.... taken when she was a 3 year old.....BIG female but so nice to work with. Very sound with a huge foot that her calves exhibit also. She's in her working clothes and coming off a hay only diet all winter....shot taken in the spring.

    Shadybrook online sale

Hi Lightnin......I produced the Poplar Lane calf and sold her along with her Dam to Shadybrook back in the spring. Her Dam is just an awesome 5 year old cow. We bought her in 2008 at the Shadybrook sale. She was just 5 months old at the time and topped the open heifer section at 10K. She is now...

    Yardley High Regard

I have seen a number of High Regard heifer calves in the USA at various sales and shows this year and I agree. Really nice patterned progeny with lots of eye appeal and profile but I suspect he will work best on high performance, big, broody cows.

What do you think of this guy?

Grant....he looks very good to me. You can tell from a mile away that's he's a bull calf. I am sure he has exhibited that since birth. Looks a lot like his sire Patent to me. Can't say I am huge fan of Patent progeny but there's no question Patent has helped the breed win respect at the...

    Lazy H Dispersal this Saturday

Just wondering if anyone has had the opportunity to see the sale cattle yet? Or, knows the herd etc? Catalog looks good and I am planning on going. Thanks

    Black noses on Shorthorn

Okotoks....what you are doing is exemplary and has contributed greatly to the breed in the past and will continue to do so in the future. Amost 50 years dedicated to breed improvement is very impressive. Perhaps one day the DNA process will be somehow simplified and made easy enough to the...

    Black noses on Shorthorn

Back in the 80's I was a dedicated fullblood Simmental breeder. We all knew that the growing non-fullbood/purebred segment of our industry was generating better animals with superior structural correctness and less calving issues; they were well on their way to dominating the show ring also...

    Black noses on Shorthorn

Tamarack....very nice looking calf and well managed obviously. Mark....your point on europe is interesting and I have no doubt this happened. There was no parentage verification back then to catch errors.... honest or otherwise. When Simmentals were first imported they arrived from several...

    Black noses on Shorthorn

I will never understand the attention and focus around colour. There's no such thing as 100% pure Shorthorns. The same applies to all breeds. I am not sure anybody even knows what the real ancestry was on those Irish import sires. Good cattle are good cattle and it's unfortunate to see colour...

    Black noses on Shorthorn

Rodeo Drive is bred up from Chianina if I am correct....he is rated at 92%....not quite what I would classify as being cross bred.

    Greenhorn sale

I usually go every year but can't make this time around. Just an outstanding event and well worth the drive. Greenhorns are awesome folks and deserve all the success possible. If you haven't been yet I highly encourage you to go.

    Tailhead

My understanding is that tail should not be set in too deeply. It acts and works more effectively for what it was designed for if it sits up somewhat. It's a fly swatter. Perhaps extremes of either setting is not good.
