    Shorthorn Discussion

Where did I hear that there was like a $26,000 deficit because of ET calves?  Just have a show cattle shorty herd, and a commercially oriented shorty herd (breed).  And then a herd that thinks they can do both.  That way when? if things go bad we can only blame ourselves. AJ if you would only...

    DEER TRAIL BUCKSHOT 5073

The few people that I have asked about him (including manager at Shadybrook) has assured me he had lots of rib.  I initially thought he would be bigger framed, given his growth, and the way he looked in the pic.  But from the people that actually saw him, he was not large framed.  Guess I will...

    Barn help

In a Morton shed we have a setup like Knabe was describing. When the floor was poured they put short heavy pieces of pipe in the concrete, so when it cured we had inch pins with plates welded on them to slip into these pipes in the concrete.  The purpose was for grain storage the pin- plates...

    Feeding Netwrapped Bales

We always cut it off or just unwrap it.  Mainly because if we don't take it off, it gets stomped in the mud or ends up and we don't always get it picked up later.  The wrap will last forever on the ground, and it's a real pain finding some with the mower the next year.  Chambero are you saying...

    South American Hereford bull. Thoughts?

It would be interesting to see what these bulls looked like as yearlings or 2 year olds (young breeding animals).  I wonder if the hereford has been used very hard?  The red bull looks more carcass oriented, the hereford looks like a big softy.  Is it because of his genetics, age, or how he's...

    Question for the mechanics.

If you were looking at the back of the tractor, the plug would be on the left side at the bottom of the transmission case (below the axle).  It's the only pipe plug on the tractor that a 1/2 drive ratchet will fit into.  You just take the plug out and the screen is right there (pull it out)...

    Question for the mechanics.

You sure about that? A ratchet will take the plug out.  For some reason I thought it drained the whole resevoir?

    Question for the mechanics.

It could be several things.  If the fluid is okay.  Filters and suction screen okay?  If those are okay then ?'s. 1.  How long is a long time for it to raise? 2.  Does rpm make it raise faster or not? 3.  Are there any other functions that are slow?  (steering, scv's, pto work okay, brakes...

"Slow and Steady" or "Show him who's boss"?

I used to halter them and tie them to a big round bale feeder.  They would pull for a little while but eventually would just stand and eat hay.  It was a good starting point.

    Harvest 2k13

Northeast MO. Our beans are around 30, most in the area are in mid 20's.  Corn is in the 120's.  June corn here is around 18% moisture.  Things looked great for the longest time, just couldn't catch a rain.  Bean's are worse than last year but corn is better.  This is the third really dry summer...

    backgrounding cattle

Simple:  Feed a square bale of alfalfa everyday.  Start out at about 5lbs. of corn and work your way up to 10 or so a day.  This with your sudan should be simple enough.  Maybe put a little rumensin in with the corn.  We usually grind some square bales of alfalfa in with the corn and hand feed. ...

up to 150,000 dead cattle in South Dakota

I would consider land an expense because it is one.  Payments have to be made annually (loan) and ideally payments would at least in part come from what one grows or runs on it.  Is it tax deductible no, only interest is.  Does it fit the definition of an expense for an accountant, NO.  You all...
