    thermometers

The best way to get a temp is to use a heavy glass thermometer with a ring top on it.  Tie a string on the ring about 12-16 inches long and tie it to a set of hemostats or a roach clip of some kind.  Put the thermometer all the way in and clip the forceps to the tail hair.  That way you don't...

Best calving ease bull for Simmy angus hiefers

I had a 100+ pound bull calf out of Ali and a simangus heifer so i wouldn't recommend him.  Climax doesn't have low enough numbers for a heifer.  Be safe, go with something proven, Angus or even Northern Lite.  He has little bitty hairballs when they are born.

    Shortie Guru's--- Vortec?

Glad to see this post.  There is a new bull coming out that is out of a Vortec/6807 cow and out of the bull Ebony's trademark so he will be a halfblood simmi.  I can't remember what his name is right now but will post pictures when I get them.  I didn't know anything about Vortec but with the...

    Pet Peeves

Probably more like they already have a good picture of the mother, why pay for a picture of the offspring that they will never use again.  Irritates me too, I would like to see both pictures

describe your first cattle showing experience

My first cattle show was with a steer that my grandfather had gave me (he gave all 4 of us grandkids there first calf, we had to buy them after that!).  He was a little angus/hereford cross that finished at 875 pounds.  His name was Albert.  I don't remember the show, it was over 30 years ago...

Need help with 10 more Photos for the Bull Bracket

I thought he was going to follow me in the RV!  He was one of those that all year long I couldn't WAIT until the night of the auction because of the pain in the butt that he was, then the week of the fair he was stuck to me like a shy 2 year old hanging around mom's neck.  Actually shed a few...

Need help with 10 more Photos for the Bull Bracket

I had a sugar ray steer my 8th year in 4-H, I am 40 now.  One of the smartest calves I ever had and the one that gave me the worst headaches.  He always knew when it would be the easiest to escape, just when you went through the gate into the ring, as I stepped around the bar of the chute while...

    Bought a donkey

We have a mini, when we used her for breaking we never put anything bigger than 600 pounds on her, she only weighs about 400 and is about the height of a 6 month old calf.  She makes a much better pasture guard!

    EQ solutions vs. EZ-all

I use it exactly like the bottle says, suds, rinse and suds again and leave it on.  Works great for the EQ solutions, not the EZ-all.  Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the adhesive remover from EZ-all but the body wash doesn't cut the mustard!

    EQ solutions vs. EZ-all

I have been using EQ solutions since it started, before the EZ-all and because our local Orschelons sells it.  Ran out at the last show we were at and bought a gallon of EZ-all body wash.  Needless to say I was sorely disappointed, not only did it not get them clean, they still had flakes in...

    Just for fun (cattle related)

I saw in an earlier response about fertility relating to the angle of the tailhead being at 90 degrees.  Is this because when it doesn't drop straight and sits more forward you will eventually get the urine pooling in the vagina?  When I was at Purdue we basically had to make a cow a new urethra...

    Ky State Fair

There were some really nice steers there for the show.  Didn't get to watch the show, I was setting up our stall.  I just saw the calves walking back and forth to Broadbent

    Hiring a fitter?

That is exactly what I am talking about.  My husband used to work sale cattle all the time, when he is grooming at a show the two-speeds are what he uses.  Only at home, the roughout clip on a wooly one is where the sheepheads come out, after the torch that is!
