    Daggum goat!

Got home yesterday and all of the cattle were in the pens pushing like they were being worked.  Baffled, I walked around and found one of the neighbor's nanny goats wandering around trying to follow them.  Our cattle have never laid eyes on a goat before but the nanny had come from a pasture...

    College Majors???

Ag Ed and go to AI school and maybe take ANSCI classes as electives.  I'm pretty sure you have to be a vet to do embryo transfer for money but AI work is a 2-4 day school that you can do any time

    How's harvest going?

The man who picks for us brought a Deere that throws plastic wrapped round bales out the back...less waste than the little half modules and even a full module, at the farm at least

Freddy, What's his pedigree and the rest of his numbers?  He might click well with a Wind daughter I'm breeding around Christmas

Thoughts on this new clubby bull....

how can you tell his height from any of these pics?  Did I miss some point of reference other than that rope angle?  And for all we know it could be tied to the top of a light pole.  Just wondering because I always have a hard time telling cattle size from pics unless there is a...

ideas needed for temporary rings for panels

then in something that gets sent out to entered showmen I would state that they should be prepared to tie to the horizontal bars in such a way the knots don't slide along them and they are free to add temporary, reasonable, thing to those bars in order to do so

ideas needed for temporary rings for panels

maybe the facilities should add some rings...add a dollar to entry fees for next year and do it then

ideas needed for temporary rings for panels

hose clamping a ring is asking for a loose calf though, if they get startled a hose clamp really isn't that strong, that's why we just use the clamps to keep ropes from sliding along the panel

ideas needed for temporary rings for panels

we just tie to the rail and if the ropes slide put a hose clamp on either side of your tying spot, maybe with something underneath to give it a little more bulk.  That's what we do in many places that have panels when we don't take our display frame or when we have more calves than will fit.

    College Majors???

I have a job lined up already for post graduation but my major is animal science with a beef industry specialization with minors in agronomy and ag comm.  I'll be working with a University research station, possibly lobbying for the industry, and eventually taking over the family farm.  I would...

CHAROLAIS bull for clubby first calf heifers .......

I think if a -1.8 is still too high the heifer needs to be burger, I wouldn't be able to sleep during calving season with those kinds of epd's or the real birthweights they indicate

You know you are from a small town when .......

when the cow doesn't need a brand to be identifiable, everyone knows everyone else's herds

    How's harvest going?

Cotton is pretty awesome somehow this year around here, corn was average, peanuts are slightly above average, and bean projections look favorable.  We definitely don't have any mud to deal with though, our place hasn't seen a drop in over 5 weeks of what is usually the beginning of our wet season

    Help - please !!!!

What about diseases?  There's a definite chance he could bring home something that will cause mass abortions or other problems, the neighbor's vaccination program should also be scrutinized

You know you are from a small town when .......

when cows on the ballfield are no big deal when half the teacher's you had were one parent or the other's first cousin and when the whole town gets invited to weddings and it's still barely a churchful

New to raising steers.. I need your help!

First off, to switch him to his new feed: Start off adding a little of the new feed to his old and gradually increase the proportion of new to old until he's completely on new feed.  We usually make this a 10 day process, increasing the new feed proportion by 10% each day.  This is slow enough...

    thoughts on my steer

for me personally he's just barely on the wrong side of too straight but if he travels well I would easily overlook it.  He's a steer for a reason after all.  Really nice calf overall

    senior pictures with my calves

When I did mine I laid in the trough/gap between 2 of my showbulls laid back to back (luck, not skill); with each of my calves just a shoulders forward of the calf and most I had an arm draped across the neck, several with my hat on a calf, one of us butting heads, and some silly/playful...
