Best way to keep cattle cool

Our fair is next week and we are expecting temps in the mid 90's.  we are taking our Porta Cool and lots of fans.  During the hottest part of the day we will throw a couple of bags of ice in the water tank of the PortaCool.  Good luck.

where do you stay when showing at KC Royal?

I just booked a room at the Hilton Garden for $159.00 a night and they only had 1 king rooms available.  My daughter is going to have the choice of sharing a bed with dad and me, or a roll a way,ha ha.  I'm not going to tell her till we get there.  No sense hearing her gripe for the next month...

what does your County Fair give out for awards?

Grand, Res. Grand, and Showmanship winners get buckles.  Everyone else gets ribbons.  We love buckles.  My daughter's last county fair is next week.  She is taking one of her steers and a one of her heifers.  Wish us luck that the temps stay in the low 90's.  A couple of years ago it was 108.

    clipping and fitting fees

My daughter and I do all the daily work with husband pitching in sometimes.  My daughter is a senior this year and clips the heads and fits the tails.  The people (who have become like family) we buy from will come a few days before and rough clip if he's able to be at the show and then show day...

    Lazy Steer

Try one of the pronged leads for the show halter from Sullivan's.  They work wonders on a pokey or stubborn calf.  Use it sparingly.  As soon as they give and start moving put some slack in it.

    Winter Rinsing

As long as the water comes out the hose, we rinse.  We've had icicles form on the wet calves.  If it's really cold we will rinse and dry in the cooler(not running of course).

    steer not gaining

Do you feed Surechamp?  You might try putting him on that.  We have two steers heading to Tulsa in about 60 days.  WE are slowly cutting back on feed and adding rolled steamed barley for finish.  I have also cut back (not completely) on hay.  If they don't clean up their feed we limit hay and...

Showing a heifer vs. a steer

We show both and the steers are always better tempered.  We have had a couple of heifers with a steer-like personality, but the steers are way more docile and affectionate.

    whats in your showbox

I keep extra washers for the ends of the water hose.  I can't tell you how many have gotten "borrowed".  They're cheap enough to share lol

    Cooking in the Stall

With our State Fair coming up in a couple of months I am trying to come up with some ideas for lunches that can be cooked in the stall area. We like to do lunch for our semi large group and then go out to eat for supper.  In the past we have done Walking Tacos and Chili.  The chili is good...

Who is going to the Jr Nationals

We're leaving Sunday evening for Shorthorn.  See you there

    Questions about Shorthorn Jr. Nationals

We are headed to Louisville next week.  Does anyone know what lot the trailer parking is?  Also paperwork says no cookers.  We usally take a crockpot to State Fair and eat out of that during the day and dinner out at night.  Does that mean no crockpot?  Is beer and other beverages allowed on...

    tying calves?

We tie up for at least 2 hours in the morning.  When we are getting closer to a big show we'll tie up for longer periods so they get used to standing longer.  If I know that they show in the afternoon, I will let them lay down in the morning and tie up afternoons.  The rest of the time they are...
