    Fall calf pics - UPDATE

Was he creep-fed? GB Gary, We try to creep all our calves for 30 days prior to weaning to help them acclimate better.  We use a 12% pellet that seems to work really well and the calves don't stress nearly as bad.  Joe

    Fall calf pics - UPDATE

Here's three of our fall calves we've finished weaning.  The bull is a Hillside Leader out of a Muridale Buster daughter.  The two heifers are both Ace of Diamonds.  All three are September - early October.

    Weston Trademark 3rd "Fillet" sons

Don't disagree at all -- your definition and mine are different. Nothing wrong with that.  That's why it's always good to understand people's point of reference. It's why early on I tried to make the distinction of long spined instead of long sided. Either way -- he's a really good bull.

    Weston Trademark 3rd "Fillet" sons

That's the bull.  I've never seen him but according to Ralph's website, he's 85" down his top line.  If he's that long then yes he would be long spined in any breed.  And if you use the traditional measurement for length (point of shoulder to pin bone, from several of his pics he looks like he...

How's that possible that you like him -- his girth and length are almost the same.  And at 85" length he would have to be considered extremely long sided by anyone's definition. But I agree he is a really good looking bull -- even if he sires calves that are long bodied! <cowboy>

Some pictures of Western Canadian bulls

AJ, Up to a point I agree with you -- selecting for length of side EXCLUSIVE of other equally important traits is highly likely to produce a larger framed, later maturing animal.  I don't agree that selecting for length of side automatically means you're turning Shorthorn cattle into a terminal...

Some pictures of Western Canadian bulls

I'm wondering how much of this length vs. depth debate is due to the selection pressures of the recent past for leaner, later maturing cattle.  In thinking back 30-40 years, I can recall a number of cattle in the Angus (Emulous, Shoshone, several Ankony bulls) and Shorthorn breeds (G-9, the...

Ryan, I've got no problem with your priorities, in fact that's what makes the cattle business interesting - we can all have different opinions and appreciate how others look at them. In looking closely at your comments, I really don't think we're really that far apart.  Like you, I fully agree...

Some pictures of Western Canadian bulls

Really like your Zanzibar and Zodiac bulls-  from the photos they seem to be the really complete type, bulls with performance, stoutness and good structure. I guess I look at them differently than some, but having had to take physical measurements on hundreds of cattle for a USDA research...

Some pictures of Western Canadian bulls

The Jefferson bull looks like a good practical bull.  Not as pretty as the yearlings in the sale, but solid  performance and he looks like he's made right.  Too bad US breeders don't think there are genetics that will work in the "real world" and still produce cattle with eye appeal and...

    Our Newest Herd Bull

Our plans are to collect him after spring breeding season.  He's going to be used on a small number of cows this spring, mostly behind our AI program but we wanted to get some calves for early 2013. The only time that I know he was out was the RWF where he was Reserve Calf Champion (behind his...

    Our Newest Herd Bull

If you've got the photo of Missie 709 and/or Matador's full sister (they were listed next to each other in the catalog) could you send them to me?  The full sister looks like most of our Matador daughters -- long, feminine and very productive.  Thanks!

    Loving Farms Sale

Good luck with the sale -- I'm sure you'll do well.  You're right about the 23G daughters -- he may very well be one of the best breeding bulls that no one ever saw.  He was one of the most consistent breeding bulls we ever used and the daughters were just great mothers.  Biggest mistake we ever...
