    Our new baby

We just weighed him about an hour ago. 63 pounds at 5 hours old. He surprised us. We were not expecting her to go for another couple of weeks.  He is doing good though. Up running around and already a nursing champ. Not bad for a first time momma.

I'll show you mine, if you show me yours....

Just born today to our former commerical beefmaster show heifer and our friend/neighbors angus herd bull. Nothing special, just something for the freezer but he is our first baby ever and the kids are in love with him.

Today we had our first ever baby calf. He was born to our former show heifer. He is just the sweetest little thing ever.

    Scramble progression show

So proud of my son and his heifer. They have been working hard and it paid off. They won their class at the HLSR scramble progression show.

    Unprofessionalism

We are new enough to showing that what I perceive as unprofessionalisam and unfairness still bother me very much. Something happens at every show we go to that gets my water hot but I'm learning more and more every day. It's a tough realization that even though my world revolves around my kids...

Showing a heifer vs. a steer

American breeds have a reputation for being difficult. My niece had a beefmaster heifer last year and that reputation was well deserved. She was a witch from day one. Our steer was more difficult to halter break and teach to lead but he was not as jumpy and nervous. You had to becarful around...

Showing a heifer vs. a steer

[font=impact][/fWhile I'm not the the most experienced on this forum my kids have shown both. Every calf is different and breed makes as much difference as steer vs. heifer.

    sure champ?

We used sure champ too for calves and our pigs with awesome results but we started our new calves on some champion drive left over from our spring projects. We are equally pleased with the results from using the champion drive but it's a lot more expensive. Now I'm not sure if we should switch...

    Kleen sheen/show sheen

Is Kleen sheen the same a show sheen? Can show sheen be used the same way as kleen sheen mixed with vinegar?

    Where to start with hair?

Thank for the comments and advice. I have been searching all the threads on washing, rinsing, blowing, growing hair and fitting and I'm learning a lot. I'm a planner and a worrier. And it seems like every thing that can go wrong will go wrong with us. As to the genetics the heifer is a...

    Where to start with hair?

We have only had them a week but I'm nervous about hair on the heifer for the scramble show. The steer will be a spring slick shear.  It doesn't seem like we have enough time to get the kind of hair we need in Nov. right now the calves are being tied up twice a day. While tied they get rinsed...

    Where to start with hair?

Our heifer is my sons Houston scramble calf so Houston is our target show but the there is a scramble progress show the first week of November we have to attend. We were hoping to do a couple of jackpots before that just for some feedback. Our steer is for county way down the road in March but...

    Where to start with hair?

Did I mention this hair has to be grown under fans and a mister in the southeast Texas heat because we have no cooler? Did I mention we need show quality hair by the first of November for a very important show? Did I mention we have no idea what we are doing and always find ourselves in these...

    Where to start with hair?

Where do you start with hair on a new calf. Our calves are fairly young, just pulled from their mommas a few days before we picked them up. At this point they haven't learned all their manners yet. We can barely get in the stall to tie them up so we can rinse them. Are we suppose to clip off...
