I don't think more concentrated would be a good idea.  We've had good success with a basic sweet feed mix for the creep feeder, and the calves turn out great.  The ones we decide to show are changed to a show ration at weaning, and the others stay on the basic feed.. which makes them grow out...

I went to the Verizon store last week and checked out the IPad and the Xoom.  The IPad is nice.. bigger screen, and lighter than the Xoom, but I'm not a "techie".. and all my laptops are Microsoft, so I'm going to wait for the updated version of the Xoom which should be later this summer. Maybe...

My prayers for everyone affected as well.  We're in Central Texas, and we have bad drought conditions here, and most people are feeding hay again, but we are very lucky that we haven't had fires like PK.  Be careful out there everyone.  One carelessly tossed cigarette can mean disaster.

We had a set of purebred Simmy twins right before Ft. Worth.. and a day before the first snow storm hit central Texas!  Luckily they are out of a good maternal cow, and she's taken them both.  Good thing because I just dried up the Jersey about a month ago!  <cowboy>

What a tragedy indeed!  But how wonderful that so many others stepped in to help the kids and the community. 

lol... yes, but you live in CANADA, we're talking about TEXAS!  We showed open last weekend and it was in the 70's!

Yikes!!!!!  They say this is the most wideswept storm we've ever had.. 2100 miles of winter weather.  We're colder than we've been for over 10 years here in Central Texas, and not going to see above freezing until Friday.  We're not used to this kind of stuff!

It's all in the MARKETING.  Apparently Heat Wave has had a reputation for good steers, so potential buyers that may not know a good animal from a not so good one recognize the sires name, and assume it will be good.  People are like sheep sometimes.. won't make their own decisions based on...

I've never thought it was good for much of anything.. kinda like feeding them cardboard.  I've never had a calf that wanted to eat it, and seemed a waste of $$ to me.  JMO of course.

lol... unfortunately I think a LOT of kids are doing just that!  The steer jockey sells them the animal, and takes total care of them until the show.  Not just for the reasons you mentioned, but also because the condition of the steer reflects on the seller.. and there are times when the calf...

If we're going to a show, I haul them loose.  I figure they'll be tied long enough at the show!  If it's to the vet or hoof trimmer, etc., I generally tie them, especially if they're green.  I've never had one hurt itself tied in the trailer, but that doesn't mean it can't happen.!

It's interesting to me that anyone would promote a bull that isn't structurally correct.  Is it because they are such good salesmen that people don't know better, or is it because they figure the bull produces terminal offspring?

Firesweep... LinZ is correct about the interest.  They announced from the podium that they changed the terms to 1/2 semen interest, and FULL possession.  I'm guessing that helped up the price substantially!

Sorry.. I'm not missing it!  We went a few years ago, and I about froze my you-know-what off!  That is insane to have a stock show, in DENVER, in JANUARY!  Of course everyone said it was the coldest it had been in 20 years.  That's about right for my luck!

She may be just growing "up" instead of putting on mass.  I have a Simmental heifer that is the same way.. she'll be good when she gets to her mature height.  You have to remember, it's hard for a heifer to be "good" from weaning through 2 years old.  They all look better at different times in...
