    Question

I agree with the other poster that quality improves with a premium show.  I think a nearby county requires that there top placing animals are terminal.  Frankly I don't understand it, the exhibitor works hard all year just to HAVE to sell it at county level to some business?  You really have to...

    Question

Back in the old days businesses bought the animal then resold the animal and was held at the regular auction barn.  Now days, its a total donation to the exhibitor.  You have to make the sale, which means you have to place relatively well.  But its so big now I think almost the top 80% make the...

    Question

Our county does a similar thing and has for years.  Its called a buyers club.  We ask EVERYONE anyone can put in any amount minimum I think is $25, we try to get $100.  Businesses, individuals, anyone who wants to support agriculture and youth in our county.  Back in the old days it was mostly...

    Breaking/fitting strangeness

I agree with Knabe... unless you have prior financial experience with them... I'd get paid by the day or at least by the week.  Wealthy people are sometimes the worst about paying when they should.  Better to be safe than sorry.  Good Luck!

    sick calf

I agree, last year we battled a sick steer for months.  Didn't use this stuff.  This year we had another steer start with the same symptoms (had a low grade fever).  Gave him this as suggested and it certainly worked pretty fast.  Good luck and don't wait too long.  Might check his temp... if...

Feeding beet pulp and full tank?

Hey Stangs... can you tell me if you feed this for other than 'holding' a calf or do you feed all the time.  Tell me when you feed, how much, what calf weights, and reasons why.  THANKS!!

    Roto Brush

We got one last year.  Yes its good but it is a pain in the rear.  You have to really have the time to mess with it. IMO... time is always of the essence around here so I like the ole rice brush best.  If your calf hasn't got much hair it will get it trained quicker but I think if you've got...

    COWS CALVING

Well its that time again and getting calves on the ground.  I'm getting very ansy though wondering why most of our best AI cows haven't calved.  We have several (some Milk Man bred mamas) 10 days late today.  (unless they didn't take and the clean up bull got em)  At this rate I'm really worried...

    i miss my market steer!!!!!!!!!

I am a Mom and now help my son with his calves.  I showed as a kid and remember all my calves to this day. Husband says I'm reliving my childhood and think he's right.  Showing heifers is one way if you're able to keep them.  I was very attached to our steers last year and cry thinking about it...

    High priced steers

Growing us as a ranchers daughter I was raised conservative, and still am.  So when I see people spend those kind of bucks all I think is they were either born with a silver spoon or it came a whole lot easier than ours has.  Also think some just like to show off or have the need to act like...

What's your favorite cold weather clothes?

Never have to much but last year at county pretty chilly.  (2nd weekend of January) then Ft Worth can be chilly too.  Love the Carhartt stuff but I have a pair of WALLS quilted bib overalls, and my most comfortable KEEN high top hikers that I like to wear.  They are old but I put a new insole...

    Fustration with Husband!

[ " you may be right, but you can't win... so accept it"    That is for sure!  Just wish I'd realize that ....  (argue) ... after 27 years.  (lol)

    Bible vs. Koran

Sure doesn't seem like progress to me... letting everyone else dictate how we are supposed to act or "not" react?  The Imam Rauf basically said that if the pastor burned the Koran and they didn't get to build there mosque there would be blood?  How much longer are we supposed to show our...

was looking at a couple Paddy calves tonight!

Last year son had two steers and one heifer all sired by Paddy.  Heifer placed first in most all classes he showed her in and just a few weeks ago had first calf unassisted (bred to Copyright).  Excellent heifer calf and very correct.  Steers did well, gentle as dogs and hair like crazy on all. ...

    SteerPlanet Creates New Friendships

Last year was our sons first year showing cattle and I have made several posts and have got tons of help.  I'm a ranch raised gal myself but realize you never know everything and each day is a new one and can bring new knowledge.  Have several facebook SP friends but one in particular went far...

    Sex odds with AI?

Just curious.  May sound like a dumb question... but we're getting calves on the ground now from our first year of AIing most of our herd.  I was wondering if the sex (heifer vs bull) with AI is the same as natural breeding? Seems so far getting mostly heifers.. course its early still but if it...

    Steer not eating

I'm gonna reply since no one has yet, but certain a few more on here can answer much better.  But here goes... I know it has alot to do with the heat.  I'd recommend rinsing him down really well for 10-20 minutes prior to feeding.  Also if you're feeding twice a day maybe cut back to one feeding...

    Last American Cowboy

All us 'cow folk' should contact the network or producer that did this show and let them know how much we enjoyed it.  I think they should go around to more families.  Although we enjoyed it, I would think your average or young person that may be considering being a rancher might rethink doing...
