    The heifer from h$ll

Andy, A few thoughts, I tend to agree with Jill, we have showed quite a few Angus over the years and many seem to be goofy when you get around their heads.  In fact we are bringing a yearling heifer to the fair this week that is this way. She is puppy dog tame, leads great, the kids get along...

    I Love the County Fair

I know it's not Denver, Louisville, or the Junior Nationals but I love the County Fair.  Our Fair starts on Wednesday and goes through Sunday and I can't wait.  We still show in the same county I grew up in and showed in and are now at the age that all of the kids I grew up showing with have our...

    Old School Fitting Supplies

We started that way also.  Our county fair is next week and we will get up early on show day to get the cattle washed, blown out, and groomed.  When I started 4H we got up early also but that was because we had to get our cattle washed early enough that they would air dry before the show...

    Steroid use and implants

We have showed a few steers at county fair but breeding cattle are more our thing so I don't know a lot about the steer deal.  What would be the purpose of changing the birth date of a steer?  We all know some people forget to check pastures and may be off a month or two on heifer birth dates...

    Old School Fitting Supplies

I remeber the bars, they were a mess.  We used Orvis for soap, it took about 3 weeks of rinsing to get it out.  Had some friends that used something called ProStyle 2000 they bought from a guy in Iowa.  No such thing as alluminum chutes, they were all metal and weighed about 500 pounds.  Before...

    Steroid use and implants

Maybe I am not understanding your question but implants are widely used in commercial cattle feeding. Mike

    Anyone Show Horses?

It is great to see everyones pictures.  It seems to me that showing animals just gets in your blood.  Like I said I grew up showing cattle but I am really enjoying the horse shows.  A barn in our area had a three show circuit this summer, the final show was last weekend and my daughter ended up...

    Ideas PLEASE!!!

How about a Mardis Gras theme?  Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler (French for Let the good times roll!) is something we heard and read a lot when we were in New Orleans for Mardis Gras last year. Mike

    Slcik Sheer Shows

No slick sheer shows where we live so I know nothing about them but I have always wondered if there is any skill involved in slick sheering a calf, in other words are there any tricks or is it as simple as it sounds, just take all the hair off?  Not planning on doing it but just curious. Mike

    Generators...Watts...Volts....Help Needed

According to Sullivans the Air Express III blower uses 2185 watts, the turbo fan uses 6 amps so 6 x 110 = 660 watts.  The total of the two is 2845 watts, in theory this means a 3000 watt generator should run both but I understand sometimes theory is wrong.  Do the number make sence?  Also what...

What products do you use on the hair for no fit shows?  Anyone use Zoom Bloom? Mike

    Sullivan SWAT

Anyone used the Sullivan Swat fly spray?  Any opinions?  We do have several fly sprays that we use that do well but thought this may be a good alternative at shows. Mike

    Anyone Show Horses?

My youngest daughter started showing horses last year in 4H and I must admit I really and enjoying it.  There are horse shows almost every weekend, the 4H and Open shows are usually somewhat competitve but not out of reach.  She is showing a $600 mare that is 25 years old and she has won several...

Tying in the Barn or Loose?

After reading your post I probably need to clarify, by tying up I mean just tying as we would at a show.  Long enough that they can stand or sit.  We do try and tie with their heads up for a few hours a days a couple of times a week when we are around. Mike

Tying in the Barn or Loose?

Too Many...Usually 9 am to 8 pm.  Sometimes I wonder if the cattle just need more time to be cattle, if you know what I mean. Mike

Tying in the Barn or Loose?

At home we always tie cattle up during the day.  I don't know that we have a really good reason for tying them and wondering what others do.  Once the cattle are well broke to tie and lead is there any reason to tie in the barn or would we be just as well to leave them in the pen loose? Mike
