    TH/ PH testing question

I recently registered my new herd bull and I am getting him tested. I want to send off hair and was just double checking if I need to keep the follicle cold (like when sending off blood) or can I just stick some hair in the envelope with the application and send it off?  I didn't see any special...

    Thoughts on Steer

I let it cook between feedings. Say I had 2 calves so I'd feed 1 whole crockpot every morning and evening. I would start the crockpot every time I feed-6am and 6pm and let it cook all day. I have a croclpot with a timer on it. I set on 8 hours and then it switches to "warm" until I'm ready to...

    Thoughts on Steer

Cooked feed will do wonders. Take a 4 quart crockpot, fill half way with barley, then fill the rest with water. feed each calf half a crockpot at each feeding. 30-60 days of this, you will see a huge difference. Barley will give a plump soft look and add a little depth. If you just want to add...

    Money Shot

Well, if you want to try him, use him on Angus or something that doesn't have club calf genetics in it. I've seen some nice calves, but my experience was a terrible one. I had one 2 weeks early and the most crippled up thing I have ever seen. We ended up putting her down it was so bad, had one...

    Better calving ease bull???

Thank you Mark! Its nice to hear someone else likes him. I'm so proud of him and so happy he went to a good home. We did have to pull him, easy though. About 85 pounds, after about an hour I don't like to wait much longer for heifers to push them out so I give them a hand. After the success we...

    Triplets

That is so neat! The breeder I buy my cattle from had a Shorthorn cow have twins (bull and heifer). The bull is my herd bull now :) And the next year she had triplets. Sadly, he lost all 3 they were early and tiny. Then he had a Maine X heifer have triplets out of his smokin joe bull. he lost 2...

Any calves this year from I-80? I haven't heard much about him so far

This is an I-80 steer we raised out of a JPJ X Yahtzee heifer. We are so proud of how he's grown. Pics are from this past weekend at VCCP. Have had lots of compliments on him!

    Better calving ease bull???

I agree. A live, healthy calf is more important than being able to register the calf. Papers won't be necessary if you don't have a live one. From experience, I used I-80 on a milkman heifer and had great success. Was probably 80-85 pounds and she had it on her own and I did register the calf. I...

    Milkman heifers

Well, from personal experience, we had one have her 1st calf last spring. She had a nice little udder, not huge, but she had enough to grow a calf. The calf turned out very nice...went to girl in Clarke Co., VA. We were satisfied enough that we bought another Milkman heifer this summer. We're...

    Can they grow too fast?

haha what winter?! Of course I couldn't complain when I was washing my heifers at VCCP and didn't have to blow the ice off that was dangling from them like last the past years. :)

    Can they grow too fast?

I wish there were more exhibitors with this problem. People around me are afraid they will get to big so they don't feed them and they're stuck fighting a hot summer to pack on the pounds. IMO if you like the steer and your only problem is the #. A piece of advice I was given is that it is...

    Family Battle over Cattle. Suggestions?

I can somewhat relate to you on this one. My brother is more interested in tractor pulling and having fun. Now that his cows are about to calve he decided he wants to sell them to get some spending money. My dad and I are in your shoes with the work, costs, etc. He just owns the cows. We asked...

    First calf of the year

I don't know if you'd want to do this, but another way you can tell if the calf died before birth is taking a piece of lung tissue and put it in a cup water and see if it sinks. If it sinks, the calf never took a breath so oxygen never got to the tissue. If it floats, it took a breath. Just a...

This one is my baby doll! He's an absolute puppy dog! Born mid September out of Gucci and a Smokin Joe heifer. He is purebred and I'll register him if so desired. He's a little green but has really come out of his shell since we weaned him. He's also halter broke and has been on the wash rack. I...

    steer and heifer names

I use names of characters from my favorite movies. My first show heifer is "Maggie" for Steel Magnolias and base my calves from her off of that movie. I have an "Iggie" from Fried Green Tomatoes. And I have a bull named "Something to Talk About" so I'll name calves from him based on that movie.

    fall calves needed

They are steers. The 2 that will be in the sale are late August calves and the other one was born mid September. I'm planning on clipping them this weekend so I'll try and post some pics. All are polled and black. The Walks Alone has a little white on the navel.
