Anybody Else Feeding hay in June?

Poultry and swine can consume wheat, barley and other grains as long as the rations are adjusted accordingly.  Of course the availability of those grains depends on location.

    Showbarn Fans which one????

What are schaefers made for?  To be hung in livestock barns, turned on run all summer most of fall and spring and never shut off, handle moisture and last 10 years or more.  Sullivan fans are nice use them for at shows, but you don't see them in commercial livestock settings why?

    th phenotypes

Remember these bulls have to "prove" themselves by siring winners before they are used heavily.  So when heatwave was first used he was siring winners and calves were doing well, idk how heavily he was used the first year, but I guarantee you he semen sale only grew for the first 4 or 5 years. ...

    th phenotypes

Life is a bell curve and guess what that means outliers.  "Hot carriers" makes no sense sorry.  As for winners being TH/PHA carriers.  It seems that many winners are a carriers in the market classes. How many clones of winners have been free of the defects?

    Twins from different bulls

completely possible, happens in swine when you run two different boars (or used too is pry a better way to put it).  No logical reason it can't happen in cattle.

    Memorial Day!!!

Attended a service today.  As the names were mentioned one man served in WW1 and 2, sort of a rarity.  It was a very impressive service and really moving I felt.

You know your breed is in trouble...

It wasn't a shot at you Shortdawg, I was talking about your Senators and House Representatives.  All they talk about is us becoming Greece, then when programs that benefit them are cut there is a problem.  If the bill truly does stiff cotton and rice farmers then I don't think it is right, but...

    Floating Cows...

Floating has pretty good success if you get to the problem cow soon enough.  One problem clinics have discovered with it is that it does take an extra person to go around and set up the float tank for a cow.  My understanding is most floats are just 24 hrs because the success after 24 isn't much...

You know your breed is in trouble...

Sorry it made it out of committee finally, in this case I would guess that means it has enough votes to pass the Senate otherwise they wouldn't let it out of committee.  http://www.agweb.com/article/farm_bill_approved_by_committee_direct_payments_over/

You know your breed is in trouble...

Anyone else see the new farm bill when it was released and the people who complained the most were............................ wait for it.................... southerners who really hate anything government except apparently a farm bill and how it pertains to rice and cotton.

    Thoughts on these Simmy bulls

I had simmi breeders tell me Dream On really took the milk out of a cow.  Anyone else have this same experience?

    The Ultimate Feed Lot Steer

I should clarify, that I think the angus x herf cow is a great maternal cow to use.

    AI question?

Yes it just means they have came into heat.  It is a great way to check on cows/heifers if you think they were in heat and then check them closely the next few days.  I have had plenty show a "bleed off" and stuck to that AI date

    The Ultimate Feed Lot Steer

Sadly Feed Grass seems to be right for once.  The angus x herf cross works but will give you less heterosis than the angus x char.  If you are feeding all the calves out and not keeping heifers the Char seems to be the best way to grow.  More pounds, better feed conversion, they will still grade...

    Preferred Preg Check Method?

Most vets would be happy with that kind of partnership it seems.  They wouldn't be ok with you having another vet who does preg checks cheaper do that work and get stuck doing your midnight C-sections.  I believe that is a big part of what DL is saying

    Electric fencers

Our fencer burns growing grass that touches it, nice brown valley of grass where the hot wire runs.

    Preferred Preg Check Method?

Just to be clear BadgerFan, are you buying your medications, wormers and such through the vet clinic also?

    5 day protocol

It is a another protocol out there Woody.  Really you can leave the CIDRS in 10 days no problem.  I am using a 6 day protocol because that is just what works for me this year.

    Preferred Preg Check Method?

With a skilled and trained arm yes palpation shouldn't cause abortions.  You will discuss that in vet school

    Preferred Preg Check Method?

If you are using a synchronization protocol then you just heat detect 18-24 days after.  You can still do a 60 day preg check on the first cows that settle and the others wouldn't be at 60 days, but you should be able to call them preg or open.  I would just AI twice, turn bull out and go with a...
