    Soundness

Assuming the judge knows a structurally sound one when they see it---not always the case.  This at least as frustrating as judges that don't emphasize soundness, IMO.

    Wanted: Steer or Market Heifer

I posted this in the Classifieds-Wanted category, but thought I'd post it here, as well. We are looking for a steer or market heiferthat would work for a July show. We are located in eastern Iowa, but would travel for the right calf. The steer or heifer would be shown by an experienced showman...

    Wanted: Steer or Market Heifer

We are looking for a steer or market heifer that would work for a July show. We are located in eastern Iowa, but would travel for the right calf. The steer or heifer would be shown by an experienced showman and would receive excellent care. In other words, you need to be willing to part with a...

Iowa County Fairs low in numbers

Our county fair beef cattle numbers were as high as they have been for awhile. Sheep numbers MAY have been down a bit. Hog numbers were down, but quality was up. I think these things are cyclical.    As for Iowa State Fair steer numbers, I see no reason to limit numbers there by enacting more...

    EXT

Yep, we have found they are best left alone when calving..... ;D

    EXT

All of the EXT daughters we have had have been excellent mothers, lots of capacity, lots of milk, etc. Disposition can certainly be an issue...As for show quality, probably not in the clubby deal, at least out of most cows. That being said, EXT daughters out of Maine cows could make some really...

    Starting a U-Fit contest

We started a fitting/showmanship contest at our county fair this year. The rules were pretty simple--3 person teams made up of 1 junior, 1 intermediate, and 1 senior 4-H or FFA member. The teams provided their own calf, and had 30 minutes to fit. ( Probably could have been 20 or 25 minutes...) ...

    Shag Unavailable ??

Well, it seems Shag is still available from Sullivan's....the ironic thing is the outfit at JNHE in Indy sells Sullivan products. Of course, he did have a different product he wanted us to buy.....

    Shag Unavailable ??

We were told that Shag is no longer available--this info came from a show supply distributor at JNHE. Anyone know more about this?  He also mentioned the probable reason for it's removal, but I was just wondering if anyone had any more definitive information.

    Fat Ration

Some cattle just don't have the genetics to grow hair. We have had a couple of Herfs in the last 2 years that would not grow hair---and they were very closely related. They were rinsed, brushed, blowed, under fans, in the dark, fed Shag, etc.  The other heifers treated the same grew hair...My...

    Restaurants in Des Moines

Yep, they are used to cattle folks eating there after a day at the fairgrounds---and have never complained about "cattle show smell...." (clapping)

    Restaurants in Des Moines

I would agree with the above. I would add Johnny's Italian Steakhouse to that list, as well.  The Machine Shed has a huge menu selection--if you can't find something that suits you, you are either darn picky or not very hungry. If you are specifically looking for a steak, I would choose one of...

Very sad news.. re: Herefordfootball - Chris Cummings...

Very, very sad news. I knew he was battling cancer, but had no idea it was close to this point. I was looking forward to meeting him in Indy next week at the JNHE....puts a whole new perspective on things. I never met Chris, but we shared an interest in Herfs and PM ed each other occasionally...

roasted soybeans- what are they good for?

The roasted beans would be a good source of fat as well as protein.  You might want to look into "whole extruded soybean meal"--still contains much of the fat, and MAY be cheaper than the roasted beans. We've used it before--it's a nice addition to show rations.
