do you use whole oats or steam rolled oats in your show ration?

Steam rolled oats are much easier to get and more common than steam rolled corn.  Our rations use steam rolled oats and cracked corn.

do you use cracked corn, steamed rolled corn, or steam flaked corn?

There's not a nickel's worth of difference.  High dollar brand name feeds use steam rolled.  High end show cattle traders that feed lots of feed use cracked unless their mills happen to have on-site steam rolling ability (which is rare).

Librarian: That study process is something that is ridiculously bureaucratic, but has come about because the agencies get sued every time they turn around. I wouldn't begin to know who should be the right entity to start this, but if there is a large cattle raisers organization in the west...

    Obese gene

Gonewest - that's a good way of putting it.  In reality, pork and poultry have largely eliminated environment as a variable due the animals much shorter growth periods and smaller size which works together to allow for indoor or highly confined feeding. I think environment plays an equal role...

Knabe: You use the word revolution.  What about your life sucks so bad that other people should die or that you are ready for, right now?  Because that's what the word means. If your life is that bad you to change something. Calm down and be thankful for what you do have.

Knabe - It isn't necessary for the federal government to own so much land in the west, but they do and a whole bunch of people - like me - want them to continue to own it.  I like to be able get in my truck and go to Colorado/Wyoming/Montana, etc and go camping/fishing in the summer or hunting...

We learned in junior high and high school American history classes why the federal government owns lots of land west of the Mississippi River.  It's not a recent conspiracy or "Goverment getting bigger".  It was how manifest destiny was brought about.  The Federal government acquired a lot of it...

XBAR - Better yet, let's load our cattle up and take them out west for the summer and dump them out on Forest Service or BLM Land.  God knows we'd have been better off doing that in the summer of 2011 than spending dumptrucks full of money feeding them during the drought.  But you know who...

I can assure you NOBODY is doing any harm to the stupid turtles.  Quit exagerating.  Even the Army has to jump through extreme hurdles to avoid them at the National Training Center in Ft Erwin, CA.

Protection of the desert tortoise under yhe endangered species act began in 1980 under Reagan most of the subsequent restrictions were done prior to the first Bush leaving office. Ranchers across the US lose leases on private land all the time and have to adjust to find more land. Any man dumb...

My goodness, did any of you ever go to junior high or high school history class?  If you want to argue against endangered species laws and the trickle down consequences those have on the use of public land that's a perfectly valid opinion.  Anybody remember those little minor events in our...

GoWyo- Thank you.  That's the first time I've ever heard that and I suppose that explains a lot of the seeming hereditary grazing rights on public land.  Do you know if the fed agencies ever try to buy those water rights or claim imminent domain on them like they do surface?

GoWyo - How does he own water rights on federal land? Did he used to own surface and his land was "taken" by BLM at some time in the past?  I'm not familiar with Nevada water law.

My company does quite a bit of work for the federal government.  We have to compete for every single penny of it. My taxes (and yours) could be a little lower if ALL users of public land had to pay fair market value as determined by competition for grazing leases, mining leases, timber leases...

    Question About Retesting bulls

We had our bulls tested last fall on a day that turned out very cold and miserable.  We had four bulls test bad (vet was looking through the microscope immediately after collection).  3 of the 4 were total surprises.  I put two of the four on cows for about a month and then picked them up.  We...

    Heff Bull ???????

I bet most do. I had a meeting with THE Bo Pilgrim (yes - he's still alive) yesterday and was shocked that mid-20s female employee of mine that was with me actually knew who he was. So maybe those of us in our 40s aren't completely irrelevant yet.

You northern boys have way more calving trouble with the same genetics than we do down here.  I guess its just a combination of environmental and handling procedures.  I've been using Heat Wave bloodlines for 10 years (probably breeding 50-60 hd/yr avg to him or his sons) and have pulled one...
