This is what it is all about

That's awesome!  She should eventually make a nice cow for him.    She will for sure make a nice heifer for him to get some ring experience with!

Simmental Percentage to Show Registered not Foundation

I think that the ASA has it very clearly laid out so the problem as I see it is why all the other shows & organizations don't just use the same criteria.  I was checking the rules for a show we are thinking about and see that  to show as a PB, they have to be at least 87.5%.  What is that...

Simmental Percentage to Show Registered not Foundation

I agree with the rest..  check the rules.    It varies in our state from show to show... at one show a 3/4 might show as a PB and at another the same heifer would show as a %.

Did anyone NOT pass the towel test?    I was afraid we had so much dirt in the hair from the barns that we wouldn't. LOL!!

LOOONG short trip to Sedalia, MO

It was a long but good week for us!   The first day sure made me appreciate fans and air conditioning.   Our trip was fortunately fairly uneventful.  That is always a good thing.   I really liked that they moved the banquet up to 2 so we could get out of there at a reasonable time.    The...

Aw! BullLady!  You just wanted to hang out at the hotel pool or at least in an air conditioned area!  Seriously though..  My thoughts on the Simmi Jr Nat'l are that they should either make it a complete no fit/blow and go or allow full fit - including paint..  The 'halfway' deal we have now...

    Hereford Jr Nats

There is a rumor going around that there will be flooding down there due to Corps of engineers manipulating flood gates & such.. but none of course are verified.

Facility ??s: MO State Fairgrounds; Sedalia Missouri

I'm assuming the tie out bedding is straw?  If so, will there be more available for purchase during the week?  Will canopies be allowed in the tie outs?

    Jr. Nationals in Kansas City

That would be awesome if Jill could get the facility moved to Wyandotte Co!    Surely there is room for it between the racetrack and the Ag Hall of Fame...

    Wound or ??????

Has anyone had much success with vetrycin?    We are trying it on one this year but can't say I'm 100% sold on it.

    Wound or ??????

What JIT says!!          We've also used some dex with the penicillin in the eyelid.  It probably wouldn't hurt to put a patch over her eye to help with flys, dust, and to keep her from squinting in the sunlight.  Apparently the later is the key as they continue to irritate it.  FWIW.. I...

    Jr. Nationals in Kansas City

I agree that you can have success at a junior national no matter who you are.  Success is not always defined by a big win in the show ring either - it could be a placement in one of the contest catagories or maybe all the new friends and contacts you make or a new technique you learn....  My...

    breeds = attitudes???

It's probably just one of those things.. One of our gentlest cows (old show heifer) has produced some of our easiest to work with calves - until this  year's calf - that calf is a spitfire.        I will say that we've run some eared cattle once in awhile and they are a little different than...

    Jr. Associations

Absolutely the Junior State Associations can be worth it.  Not every state has an active jr assoc in every breed..    Our state has several breeds  with very active junior associations and a couple breed where I'm not even sure they exist.    Anyway..IF you are willing to do the work...  start...

    Thawing Semen

There was a time in the 80's or early 90's when this was somewhat popular.  It can work and I've done it this way but I think I have more success with the warm water thawing method.

Twin heifers born, 1 might die.

What they said..  get her warm.    We had a bull/heifer set of Sheriff Taylors born on the worst night ..  cold & rainy...  long story short, we didn't find one soon enough and ended up loosing them both.

The use of EPD's in the show ring.

I was at a show one time and ended up standing next to the parent of the kid that placed last.    His sibling placed next to last.    IMO, that is where those calves needed to be - based on my visual observation of phenotype.  This parent was all upset and was claiming the calves got beat by...

    Another pig question

Milk will give them extra protien and fat.  Their hair & skin also look  a little better when they have milk in their diet.  The fact that it is liquid seems to help get a little more belly in them - which is good.    I'd say to go for it!    Be careful though that you don't give them so much...
