    Cates and RC sale's

I will never figure out why many people do not believe anyone would spend a high dollar on breeding stock? Of course, there are many that are fake prices, but I do not think that is even a consideration with the Cates families, In the day, where a new JD chore tractor can cost more than...

    Older Shorthorin bulls

I am quite surprised to hear that the Hilltop herd had some Salers in them. I visited that herd several times and I can't recall ever seeing any evidence of this. Most of the genetics Carvin Guy was breeding back then originated from cattle he purchased from the Rorvig herd in North Dakota and I...

    Dr. Martin Nold

I believe that Martin Nold did purchase the entire Jackson herd but I do not remember hearing much about them after he bought them. Weston Romeo was a horned Leader 21st son that I remember very well out on pasture at Weston. He was a super correct bull with adequate muscling and soundness. He...

    Dr. Martin Nold

Thank you for letting us know. I was just thinking about Martin and of my many visits to their ranch in SD, a few days ago. I remember on one visit, I was given a set of spurs to put on my boots and handed a saddled horse, and told we were going to see the cows on horseback. About 5 hours later...

    NAME THE BULL!

Columbus was a better bull than is shown in this picture, for the times. He seemed to really work on some bloodlines popular in that era, and worked very well on Super Flag daughters. As was the case with most milking Shorthorn bulls, his daughters were better than his sons. I do remember a...

    Shorthorn historians... help pic updated###

My dad always told me, that you must be doing something right if people are starting to talk about you. When I purchased Ready Go, at a then record price at the Polled Congress in Louisville, I was devastated when rumours started coming back to me, that he was definitely part Salers to fullblood...

    Shorthorn historians... help pic updated###

I remember the year that Colby Smith showed up in Denver with two Shorthorn bulls. One was a bull named Hey Jude and he got everyone's attention and ended up being Reserve Grand bull in the show. This was probably back in the late 70s or possibly the early 80s( some of those years are blurred...

Here is a present picture of Sparkle Delight 2X taken yesterday. 2017 for our area is now being called the driest year in recorded history and we have had less rainfall than any desert averages in the world. 2X is shown here in a low spot in the pasture than is usually filled with water ( guess...

Yes, I still have about 60-70 vials of Ready Go semen. I will have to check and see if any of it is exportable to the US. Ready Go is the only bull I have owned that I have sold semen on every year since he was purchased in 1973. We have sold semen from him for 42 years now and some people still...

CABANA -PLEASE TELL ME WHAT THESE CATTLE ARE-SHORTHORNS HERE NEED THESE GENETICS

I have a few canes of Lincoln Red semen in one of my tanks yet- from back in the 70s. I was not impressed with the udders on most of the Lincoln Red females from that era, and I thought most of the Lincoln Red cows I saw in the UK 5 years ago were much the same- especially the females with any...

CABANA -PLEASE TELL ME WHAT THESE CATTLE ARE-SHORTHORNS HERE NEED THESE GENETICS

I have wanted to go to Argentina for the past several years. The cattle I see winning the Palermo show don't appear to be fed much more than some that win here in North America. A very good friend of mine has made many trips down to this show, and each year he says the cattle in the shows are...

    Purebred Chi bull Fonto

I used Fonto as well as Friggio back in the day. I also remember seeing Fonto in the stud several times. His calves had a bit more style than the Friggio sired calves. Also maybe a bit shorter bodied and not quite as much " get up and go" ( temperament) than some of the other early Chi bulls.

We will only be selling two bulls in our sale but they are both proven herd sires. Both have proven themselves here and they are both sound in every way. 1) HC Free Spirit 6Y -  Probably the most complete herd sire we have ever used. When he was born, I knew we had something extra special and I...

Justin, I have always got time for stories.. haha!  If you are thinking of coming up for the sale, remember you will need a valid passport to get into Canada.  I had the misfortune to lose my sister to your Ruby last spring. She was very close to calving and I put her in a calving pen. I went...

I have real mixed emotions about doing this, but this blasted drought has made this decision seem more right for now. Until I find out if I am going to be laid up with some ticker fixing, I need to be ready to take that on. Right now, I feel fine for a guy my age who has a few aches and pains...
