    County Fair results

Hi everyone, We had our county fair last night. My daughter did fantastic! We took seven cows in, different combos. Two steers, two heifers and cow calf pair and a heifer calf. All but one steer and the cow from the cow calf pair were born on our ranch. The shorthorn steer won Grand Champion...

heifers ankles popping when she walks.

We have shorthorns that are notorious for popping. After reading one of the past posts we got a product called Star Shine. I have to check to see who makes it. Anyway, it's in pellet form and has a bunch of minerals in it plus selenium. We've been feeding it to the calves and show cows for about...

    Market Steer

We show the same time of year. Yes, I would look for a late January-early March calf. Much later and it's hard to get weight on easily. Check with the extension office and see who has club calf sales. See if they will let you come and preview the calves. Look through semen catalogues at the club...

    Cattle injected with air

To those who commented in this thread, that you should just keep quiet, I place you in the same category as the cheaters themselves. Better suck it up and grow some gonads, or you won't get too far in this life. Sorry, I don't agree with this comment. I would never feed a child to the wolves...

    Pray for rain!! Please

CJC glad you got some rain. I hate to be ungrateful but I wish our rain pattern would move on down the road. We are soaked to the brim. I think it's rained here at least twice a day for the last 4 or 5 days. Before that we've had a steady flow. We can't get our 1st cutting done either. Fair's...

    Cattle injected with air

I agree with so many things that have been posted on this thread. Showing cattle isn't for the faint of heart. It's a tough, accusation filled, competitive world. Do your best to bring good solid cattle that have been feed and taken care of to the shows and keep your mouth shut. Our fair is in 6...

    Accusations of cheating at fairs

I absolutely would push the issue and force the board to extend an apology, however you have to do it. Make sure that the apology is posted whether in a newspaper or monthly county 4-H newsletter. A similar (not involving a cow) thing happened to my daughter. People who ran the livestock judging...

Fair's in 7 days pic of our steers

He's not huge framed. Can't feel any ribs now. Could probably come in around 1250-1275 but we aren't going to have that much time I'm afraid.

Fair's in 7 days pic of our steers

Thanks everyone. On the shorthorn picture he's kind of scrunched up through the front. Hard to take a good picture when you are the only one home and your corrals and fields are ridiculously muddy. When he's extended the brisket doesn't appear as large but I definitely get what you are saying...

    what bull should i use?

We bred our PB Angus cow from the Lucy line to our PB Shorthorn bull Tommy Boy. She's huge, thick really deep with a big butt.

Fair's in 7 days pic of our steers

Wow, can't believe it's that time of year again. We have two steers my daughter is showing. I wish I could get the knack of taking good pictures. Both steers are nice and covered. The shorthorn is from our bull and his calf picture is my profile picture. The other is an Irish Whisky and Mossy...

    Pray for rain!! Please

If anyone is in the path from Colorado you should get some. It's literally rained here 6 times in the past 2 1/2 days. We are extremely grateful and pray for all of you.

Which Bull To Use on PB Shorthorn?

I'd look for a bull that was taller and had thicker bone mass to him. Maybe more hair?

    Looking to buy a heifer

We have an all white Deadwood-High Roller March heifer. She's been on creep and now grain for about 4 months. The side view of her, her belly is shaded. She's very deep and thick. Dame has won numerous shows.

    record books

We have to do them too in order to show. The dumb thing is we have to turn them in about three weeks before fair so you have to guesstimate on projection sales price.

    Is she to thick??

My daughter is showing a blue roan this year out of a Lucy Angus and our PB Shorthorn bull. She a BIG girl. Weighs in about 1390. She's super thick but still very feminine. I was always told as long as they aren't sloppy fat you can't get them too big. Seen a lot of shows where that's true...

Comment was originally made figuratively not literally.

    The heifer from h$ll

Sorry but I really hate it when people generalize. We have some of the most gentle and docile shorthorn heifers. I'd trust my granddaughter who's 7 to lay under them. Once again I think it boils down to genetics and how the calves are handled.

    The heifer from h$ll

We had a crazy Angus heifer from the Lucy line. We couldn't show her but she made an awesome shorthorn plus calf that we are showing this year who has a great disposition. I'd be interested in the bloodlines of the problematic shorthorns. We've had absolutely the best luck with ours and they are...

    Show Yesterday

You did great! Don't sell yourself short. Some people show for years and don't do that well.
