    one crazy coyote

We have had problems with coyotes, one year one attacked a cow having trouble calving and was eating her while she was calving. My husband hunted him down and got him, then left him lay where he was killed. Someone said that if you do that, they won't come back to that area...now that may not be...

    silverado

I have seen Silverado many times...he is a very moderate, complete bull.  We are using him in our ET program this year. If you specific want Braunvieh crossed with Chi or Maine...try Thorne Ranch  in Oklahoma.  www.thornelandcattle.com

    How is your weather???

We are super windy with 45 mph gusts from the north. Our weather is very erratic right now, one day 80, next day 60, next day 80, near freezing next night.  Wait, what am I saying....I live in Kansas....our weather is always erratic.  The wind, though, has been really strong for several days...

So my 8 year old son is going to enter a costume contest with his Braunvieh heifer at Jr Nationals...he wants to go as a wrestler and his heifer will be his "coach". She will have a whistle around her neck, wristbands and we would like a big ball cap on her head that says "COACH"..  Any ideas on...

    Heifer Issues Need Advice

I would also contact the seller and let them know. I know when I sell females I generally guarantee them to breed, and if I had been contacted with your dilemma I would make it right. Good luck, not all will do that.

    Show steers lost in fire

So sorry to hear about this. What a sad story. I can relate somewhat. When I was a kid, we had a barn fire and inside were my brothers sheep herd that was lambing at the time. He lost over 20 ewes and all their lambs. It was a horrible thing and the worst was that there was livestock inside.  We...

Well I have good news to report....out of the blue this evening the calf sucked and drank like it knew all along what to do....took a full week of trying but finally!!! The only thing I did different was give it some nutridrench this morning and a shot of penicillin. A good end to a long week!

How long can this go on?

Thanks everyone for the replies. The calf does not have a mama so I cannot put him with anyone else. But, I will try some of the suggestions. I do get the calf up when I tube him and he pretty much poops and pees like clockwork each time I feed him so I don't know if the rubbing will do anything...

How long can this go on?

No, he won't suck on anything. He will only swallow.  If I put the bottle in his mouth and use my finger to squeeze out the milk slowly, he will swallow and drink it, but it takes a very long time and after a while he stops swallowing and starts wasting.  Another strange thing....this calf...

    protocol for inducing

Do you give 5cc Lutalyse and 25cc Dex at the same time to induce? Generally when would you expect them to start calving from that point?

    Question

That was my thoughts as well, were the calves sired by the same bull?

    placenta previa?

Not sure if this is what we had last night but would love any advice on it. Cow calving last night, looked like afterbirth coming out and no feet. Get her in, expecting to have foot back, head back, something....but all was in position. Pulled the calf, but it was dead. Was wondering if the...

Extremely gifted young man (not exactly cattle related)

Cowboy....I was wondering if you were going to respond to that "old cowboy" comment!!! Too funny. I know you and RW go way back....so does that make him O-L-D too? Naw. Just remember....age is a state of mind!  And, I will concur that Nate is Great with horses. Great kid, great family.  See ya...

    Recip Age?

We have found that from age 4  (when calving) and up are good. We don't have an upper age limit, just until we don't feel the recips produce enough milk to raise a quality a calf. We have some 11 year old recips this year. We have found it very hard to get 1st calf heifers to stick and so now we...

    Rope Halters

Try Sharon Christopherson. She is from Morrisonville, IL. It is a family business, but I will guarantee she makes wonderful halters (both for yearling size cattle and little weanlings). Variety of colors. No pokey thing either (unlike Sullivans). I think she can customize the size if you just...
