    Holding one early

Without looking at the steer, what should my ration look like, and how much please.

    Holding one early

I would love to drag him a bunch, but with work schedules, school schedules, blah, blah, blah, we won't have much of a chance to get him out much until around the middle of Dec.

    Holding one early

We have a steer that since we got him, we've had him on a high fat ration to stunt him because he's a bit framy. I think we are to the point now where he will start putting on fat and not grow taller. Right now he is about 50-50 1/2" hip height, and weighs 1050#. We are somewhere in the...

    Toein out? need some opinions

I agree with the above posters. Toeing out as a weaning calf is a soundness issue that I have seen in lots of calves as they get bigger. I too, have been burned with that sales gimmick that hoof trimming can fix it. The right guy working the table can help, but he/she won't fix it. We had a 500#...

    Steer not eating

Same thing happened to my daughter's Leroy Brown steer back in June. Fans, misters, rinsing, nothing would work. I went to the vet, and got 40cc of long-lasting penicillin mixed with B12 and gave that to him, along with 5 daily doses of probias. Still nothing. We finally slick-sheared him...

    Natural Stride

I used it on some barrows a couple years ago as a preventative.....worked ok, but you just can't change genetics.

    For the electrical gurus

The breakers are (2) 40 amp breakers running in parallel.

    For the electrical gurus

Thanks....I'm planning on having an electrician make the cord for me. I'm pretty sure that he will use copper, and I assume he will use SO cord, but then again, I don't know. The plug in was intended to run a 220 welder, so it should be pretty heavy duty.

    For the electrical gurus

How many amps do a blower take? I was thinking of making a 220 extension cord for the barn with (4) 110 outlets coming outto run 4 blowers (2 Sullivan Y's). It is on dual 40 amp breakers. Surely that would be enough, wouldn't it? Thanks!!

Any well (water) experts on here

I don't want to sound like a smart alleck.....and sure don't intend to, but why not add an extra tanke to pump into, for more reserve water? I realize that it also has to be filled, but you wouldn't have to run your pump as hard, or as often.

    Push or hold??

What's you guys' opinions for market steers? Do you buy older cattle that you can finish early, or do you like to feed younger cattle that you can hopefully get fat in time for market shows? Please add reasoning for your decisions. Thanks

    Steer Opinions

I agree with old word shortie, it's kind of tough to tell, but he looks like he's gonna be plenty thick. I assume he weighs 900-1000#, and you are going to show Ft. Worth?  If that's true, don't worry too much how he looks now, just have someone in the know come out and look, and give you some...

would like some feed back on this calf (sire heat wave x char.)

If you want ultra-critcal, then yes....a little coarse in the front. I absolutely love the depth of rib, and that big, square hip. Being a Heatwave, I'm going to say that there's no chance of him being too big. Very nice steer. Great job!!!

    Showmanship Question

In my honest opinion, there is no choice. Let her show the one that she is the most comfortable with. If it's the calf, fine. If it's the fat steer, that's ok too, but ultimately she needs to be able to go into the ring relaxed, and not worrying about what the animal is going to do. If you have...

    New 4H leader

First of all, you need to find out what age ranges you're going to have. Then,(if it were me) at the first meeting, go through the opening formalities of the meeting, and then do something completely un-ag related (swimming party, etc.), and just get to know those kids.....don't be afraid to...

    Last American Cowboy

I've got to get a DVR......but it really ticks me off that the main audience that would watch are farm/ranch people. 7:00pm central time in the summer is not a very condusive time to be showing it, along with repeats at midnight. I've only got to see bits a couple of times, but does it seem to...

    Clean water tank

It's a 110 gallon tank, how much clorox should I use?

    Clean water tank

Anybody have ideas on how I can keep the green suff out of our calves water tank? We tried goldfish, but they keep dieing, I think because the water gets too hot, and not enough oxygen in there. Any chemicals that would work, that won't hurt the cattle. I don't have time to drain it everyday...

    weight?

I would think anywhere from 800-1000 right now. You have lots of time to play with feeding to get him just right by February.
