New red Simm Bull CDI Rimrock 325Z

I checked this calf out and I agree...pretty useful kind of young bull. I like the sire Beef King, and the numbers are pretty dang good. So then here's the question: Do you use the proven sire who made this calf you like, or do you opt for the next generation and use a completely unproven...

    What to do?

Like you, I would be anxious and impatient. But I wouldn't be worried. I think that's Mother Nature's way of testing your patience! Lol

    Due Dates and calving

Almost every calf I've ever had born that I knew the due date on has come within plus or minus 10 days. I've had a couple that were earlier, and a couple that went 11 or 12. Typically, the longer they go, over, the bigger the calf is, but that rule is definitely not absolute. I don't even start...

    Ways to attract new customers

We hosted an open house--called it Open House at the Farm--in 2006 to celebrate 35 years in the Simmental business. It started as an idea to invite customers and potential customers to our place, and it seemed obvious we should have cattle on display. And if we were gonna have cattle on display...

    Newborn with Swollen rear hock

Sometimes newborns are kinda crooked and disproportionate...my first question would be, "Are you certain there's swelling?" If there is, my guess would be that maybe the calf got stepped on a little or something like that...if it doesn't seem to bother her, I would just watch her & make sure it...

? on embryo calves and semen

Twin ET calves have been discussed here at least a few times that I know about. It isn't common, but apparently it CAN happen and does. There may be more possibilities, though, and every scenario might be a little different. I asked the embryologist we use to do what little ET work we've done...

    Clover Hay??

That IS a horror story!... What's considered "sweet clover"? I manage a set of cows, and the first spring I was there, we lost three FAST to bloat. I got educated on bloat on clover quickly...the hard way. I've lost a couple of calves that I can't explain...maybe three or four in three years...

    CIDRs

Our guy says to wash them good with warm soapy water...NOT disinfectant. Disinfecting them can dilute or damage them if you plan to use them again. I have reused some that were cleaned with disinfectant and i got along ok. It makes sense to me not to soak them or leave them in a disinfectant too...

    Donor Flush Pricing

We don't flush a lot, but we happen to be flushing two cows tomorrow! I just recently went thru trying to figure out how much to expect everything to cost... Expect set up to be btwn $250-350 & should include drugs for the donor....our embryologist supplied everything except the CIDR and heat...

    Clover Hay??

Too much clover can cause bloat, so kinda watch for that. If you haven't seen any bloat, maybe it's not gonna be a concern. It's worse on clover pasture than on clover hay, but if there's enough in there, it can be a pronlem. If you're only side affect is the loose stools, the cattle would...

    What to do?

I would never induce unless there was a serious problem, and you don't have a serious problem. 10 days over is longer than you'd like them to go, but it's not completely unheard of. At all... Watch her closely and be ready in case she needs help. You can make things worse by interfering when...

    calve won't suck!

Every four hours is too often...he's not gonna starve, and he'll be a lot more cooperative if he's hungry. Unless they're weak and sickly and need special attention, I would put him on a morning/evening schedule and make sure he eats good twice a day, preferably mama's milk if that's...

    Which would you rather raise......

That's an interesting question... As long as I've been around cattle which is all my life, I've ALWAYS wanted heifers. It's kind of funny since I'm pretty commercially oriented for a purebred seed stock guy, and typically, our bulls are worth more than the heifers. Even if I was raising feeder...

    Calving Trouble

Dang, that's a rough start! I always take it hard when I lose one, regardless of whether or not there was anything I could have done to save it. We've had a pretty good spring, both at home and in the herd I manage...lost one in two inches of snow and had a set of twins, so I'm even!
