Breeding advice for my Simm heifer.......

We had about a dozen Top Grades this spring, and all of them have been small and come easily. A couple out of heifers, and none that were what I would call remotely big.

Doing a school project, need ideas and data concerning cattle

Right...any two traits that are either positively or negatively correlated should work for a statistics project. Birth weight & either weaning or yearling weight was also the first thing that came to my mind. It may seem too easy, but it would be a relatively straightforward concept to explain...

Breeding advice for my Simm heifer.......

I wasn't completely sure about my concerns, so I wanted to do a little research before I addresses issues that might not be issues. Looking at the current EPDs of the first two sires, Lock N Load & Star Power, both bulls have the same weaknesses on paper: MCE, Milk, Marbling, and API. I do like...

Breeding advice for my Simm heifer.......

Do you happen to have any pictures of the heifer? What are your plans for the calf? How important are EPDs, color, or other considerations?

    Hereford Cross Heifer

I like her! I'd buy her... She's marked more like the traditionally colored Simmental cattle I grew up with than she is a Hereford, and I realize she's half Hereford. I loved the color patterns of those cattle back before everybody was bias toward making em all black, all solid colored, and all...

Sell him as a show steer, or keep him a bull? New Pic on 8/11/13

I'm really curious why he was born 28 days early. That's pretty extreme, and it's outside the window I would consider normal...plus or minus about ten days. Obviously, I like the minus ten days better than the plus ten; 28 days seems like you were lucky not to lose him. Are you sure there wasn't...

    Thought this was cute

Babies without ear tags look like nobody loves them! Lol I finally got my cows worked last weekend, and all the calves have tags now. They just look like they didn't just wonder into the herd now! Regarding the twins...if your vet says so... I'm still not convinced. I'm sure there are all...

    To keep purebred or not...

The answer to that question depends on your plans for the calf... Good Hereford cattle are gaining some popularity again in our part of the world. If you think you can market a purebred Hereford calf, regardless of whether it's a bull or a heifer, then I might breed her that way. If you don't...

    help please with steer.

I would rate him a strong 6 on a scale from 1 to 10...definitely better than average. Based on the photo, I agree he seems to have some decent muscle shape, and he looks sound enough from a structural standpoint. He looks a little green yet, but if your show isn't until June, you have time to...

    Looking for cattle

There are a good number of sales all over the country this time of year selling Simmental, Angus, and SimAngus females. Contact American Simmental & ask to get on the list to receive the Sales Call email each week. I'm sure American Angus would help you get on a list as well. You could also get...

    Different kinda perfect calf.......

I don't think it matters which segment of the industry you're in, if you're females aren't productive, it's hard to make it work. Whether you're raising club calves or seed stock or commercial cattle, you have to know where you're going and focus your decisions on that goal. Regardless of the...

    red simmental females

I would recommend Moser Simmental Ranch in northeastern Kansas. Good cattle...GREAT people. I think they still run some reds as well as blacks, and I'm pretty sure they'd have both purebreds and SimAngus. I don't think you'd be disappointed with the cattle, and they'll treat you right.

    Land Issue

I don't see that anybody is being "bashed" here, except maybe John Lennon! It would be nice if everybody's word or a handshake still meant what it used to...that's just not the world we live in anymore. I agree completely with Limiman...I don't think you could pay for advice that's any sounder...

    any opinions welcome

That's extremely disappointing. Thanks for the pictures...from a purely educational point of view. Good luck determining the issue if that's possible. Did you send the calf or any samples of the calf to a lab anywhere?

    Thought this was cute

That was exactly my question, Knabe... Simmental also have more twins than a lot of breeds, and sometimes it's the most fertile cows that will pop out a set now & then. I'm not convinced there isn't a genetic component...we do see them sometimes in certain cow families, but obviously that's not...

    Breeding .??

U need to decide when u want her to calve... Personally, I don't do summer calves, and I consider April summer when it comes to calving seasons. If she's big enough and she's cycling, there's no reason you can't breed her earlier if you'd rather have her calve earlier in the spring.

    Breeding .??

If a heifer is cycling, then she's sexually mature enough to get bred, technically speaking. She's probably more likely to conceive if it is not the first time she's cycled... PROBABLY. Depending on their size & when you want them to calve, I agree with Limiman...we try to breed em at 13-15...

    Thriller

Hey...Just wanna throw out there that my theories on color are just that...theories. I'm not an expert on color genetics...just a student of observation, almost all of which has been with Simmental & Simmental crossbred cattle. I like to read about color genetics, and I always try to make sense...

Not sure what you've gotten from your pm's, but I hope they're better than most of these... I like "Walk On" the best of these BY FAR!

Sell him as a show steer, or keep him a bull? New Pic on 8/11/13

"Small second calvers that aren't bred to me mamas"...I wish I had a field full of those! (He said sarcastically...) In all honesty, I like this calf a lot better from the rib forward than I do from his flank back. I don't know the Maine pedigrees or cow families, but it sounds like that is a...
