    Opinions on Grizzly heifer

I'd love to see a real profile picture of her after a basic clip job just to clean her up & get rid of the ragged edges. I kinda wonder if she had enough shape, but it could totally be the pic angle, the lighting, and the hair that makes her look flatter than she really is.

    Opinions on Grizzly heifer

If she's structurally sound and stout enough, she'd beat bigger heifers that have less muscle or volume or aren't as sound. Every time if I was judging! It's hard to tell much about her from the picture, but yeah...every kid doesn't have to have a class winner in order for it to be a great...

    Questions on DNA Testing

There are several things you can learn from DNA tests through the commercial labs...parentage, genetic defect status, genetic traits like whether animal is homozygous black or homozygous polled, or if they carry recessive gene for red coat color or horns. It depends on the lab...you can access a...

What Sim bull to use on Angus for clubby look

I had a few Renditions last year, and one of them in particular was fairly nice. She did well last summer and will be shown again this year as a senior yearling. I also like Built Right on either Angus or Simmental cows to make functional, sound cattle with some eye appeal. I suspect there...

Opinions on herd numbers in the US

Yes...I believe national cow numbers are the lowest they've been since around the 1950s. You can only manage what you have the resources to manage, so you gotta do what you gotta do. From a business or production standpoint, though, now is not a great time to downsize your operation. Each cow is...

    Flushing ?

Right...I agree. Unless you're talking about the recips calving in early April and trying to put embryos in in late May, that's pretty tight. You'll be lucky to get the recips cycling that quickly. You could buy embryos, and I might recommend that to get you started. It's a lot less complicated...

    Flushing ?

You would work with an embryologist or somebody who is trained and certified to do that mind of work, and they give you the drugs and the protocol. We're flushing two cows this month, and they got CIDRs yesterday. They get a shot of Cystorelin when the CIDR goes in, then a shot of Lutalyse when...

    Flushing ?

No...that's one flush...you superovulate the donor, then you breed her, then you flush her. If you want to flush her again, you start all over again. A lot of people flush a donor once or twice and then breed her and let her have a natural calf. Then you might flush her again the next year...

    Flushing ?

I'm not sure you're feeling like your questions have been answered...or that the process is making sense to you. It can get confusing because everybody has a different protocol, but the basic process involves superovulation, breeding, and then flushing. You have to start your donor on shots that...

Best bull new or old to add color

Neither Angus nor Hereford have the spotting genes like you'll find in Simmental & Maines. I would imagine you could get a little chrome out of Hereford cross cows using a bull that carries a spot gene, but I doubt you'll have many that have much more than some white on the faces, feet, bellies...

Best bull new or old to add color

Spot genes are recessive, so you need to have some color on the dam's side as well in order to get color out of any sire. You can make white faces and such out of Angus cows or other females that don't have recessive spot genes, but don't expect loud spotted calves out of cows like that, no...

    Cow Problem, need 2nd opinion

I agree that it is not common, but part of the equation is that most cows that are gaining back time are late calving to begin with.  These cows weren't in there third trimester until the cold weather was done.  It is much more likely for them to return to a normal cycle after 45 to 60 days than...

    Hey color experts!!

I don't learn something EVERY day, but some days I learn two things, so it evens out, I reckon.

    Cow Problem, need 2nd opinion

One factor that we sometimes don't give enough credit is selection pressure for things like fertility. Herds that don't cull cows that calve every 15 months are going to have cows that calve every 15 months. Those of us who demand our cows stick to a 12-month calving interval, over time, develop...

    Starving Calf Question

I'm just trying to figure out why you included, "other than get rid of the cow" when you asked for ideas. Other than that, I really don't have any. If she has had mastitis at some point, she may have lost a quarter or even more. If her bag still looks productive and she seems to be milking in...

    Hey color experts!!

Yes...most of the traditionally colored Simmenal cattle were diluters. The "dark gray curly hairs heifer" sounds like a rat tail...my guess is she has little to no switch on her tail. That's a condition that you occasionally get with the combination of the diluter gene & the black gene...not...

    Cow Problem, need 2nd opinion

The cow with the 37-day-old calf was obviously in heat. We've seen cows cycle as early as three weeks after calving, and a lot of our cows will be in heat around the 30 day mark. Your cow that's due to calve soon is hormonal, and it's typical for pregnant cows to behave that way during late...

    Shorthorn Cow Maker

Just an FYI...the continental breeds first arrived in North America in the 1960s. Maybe they weren't extremely popular in your neck of the woods until the late 70s and early 80s, but they were here, and they were pretty prevalent. We started breeding Simmental in 1971.

    Crimson Tide Heifer

I love pretty much any baby animal, but I never thought there was anything cuter than a baby pig or a baby goat. She's right there in that category! Good luck with her! Is there any chance of her being reunited with her mama?...or is this one yours to raise til weaning time?
