I use wood pellet bedding or stove pellet, it absorbs the urine and expands. as long as you keep it clean the stuff lasts for weeks.

I would agree that after is the right time, Thou I have had a judge ask me what the sire was on , and it was a no name sire. I was impressed when he still put the animal in the top of its class. I think good judges make the right calls regardless of anything, breed, sire, owner, ect.
