if you went to denver what where your favorite display bulls?

It looked like Boss Premeire Black Cattle has another good set of Angus bulls going.  Did Green Valley Cattle have a pen of cattle there?  Denver has usually been the place to see the great new sires that Dennis is coming out with.

    New definition for Clubby bred

That is because you have an excellent base herd of mama' cows that are out of solid angus, simi, and some maine genetics. Clubby bulls on clubby cows is where so many things are going wrong in this industry.

Western Exposure Sale Catalog- Worth a read

That is some funny stuff!  I guess it worked though.  We are all reading a catalog that most of us would have never opened.  (lol) (clapping)

    AI-ing

It is definitely a good skill to have, but just be prepared for it to cost you more than just the school and equipment. After you go to school, you just need to work and work at breeding your own cows. You WILL have a lower conception rate early on, and your calving season may get strung out a...

    Maine Bulls

Montego Bay heifers have been proving themselves as great show heifers, and as great breeding females.  They a have been solid color patterned calves with light birth weights.  Many have been successful in the show ring, and as these females are just hitting production, where they are proving...

What to breed Maintainer heifer to?

No matter what Maine bull you breed a 25% heifer to, you will not be able to get a High Percentage (75%) calf.  Personally, I would recommend Montego Bay to breed a heifer to, but I am a little bias.  (lol)

    clipping help

Have you talked to the breeder of your steer?  You might want to ask who they recommend.  I know there are plenty of people in your area that can do a nice job.

When should we wean a prospect?

We shoot for 120 days to wean, and have weaned as early as 90 days with no adverse effects.  We put the same feed out as creep feed as the calves will be weaned on, leading to a very easy transition.

    Easy Calving Shorthorn Bulls

I have a family that has a JPJ yearling heifer.  They would like to breed her Shorthorn, but I am not as familiar with Shorthorn genetics as some of you on here.  Bull needs to have some style to him as the family would like to show the calf if possible, and there is a chance the heifer is a TH...

    Steer prices

Don't assume what you see selling on the online sales is what show steers in general are selling for.  For every steer you see for sale in an online auction, there are a hundred more that are for sale by small breeders that don't have the big name or a sale.  There is no reason you can not find...

determining whether a heifer is a freemartin

I agree that aborting one is not the #1 option, but many people do not have a proven easy calving bull easlily available.  Cutting one out does not sound like a better option.  JMO - but I do think bull breeding in this kind of situation would be the cheapest, and most certain way to determine...

determining whether a heifer is a freemartin

If she is good enough to show, and you are planning anyway to feed her past breeding age, just kick her out with a bull for 30-45 days once she is old enough.  If you do not have an easy calving bull, just ultrasound her 30 days after pulling her from the bull.  If bred, abort her and rebreed...

    Sale Flyers

My wife has always made our flyers on Photoshop, and we just print them out at Kinko's.  We are also a big fan of Vista Print, but haven't used them for flyers yet.  We have mainly used them for business cards and post card advertisements. If you are looking for someone to design a flyer...

Sell him as a show steer, or keep him a bull? New Pic on 8/11/13

Thank you for the comments, both Mark and Jack.  Jack, we are selling full possession and full semen interest on him, so it will be up to the new owner to collect them if they want.

This years show team (pics to pick on)

I like the heifer a lot.  She has great lines, and is super feminine looking.  The bull looks thick, but just kind of piecey.  All the parts are there, but just doesn't quite tie them together in a smooth package.  Should be a good breeder though.

Sell him as a show steer, or keep him a bull? New Pic on 8/11/13

Thought I would give a little update on how the calf in this post is doing.  It has been 5 months since he was last clipped and pictured, so I took a little time today to clean him up as we are getting closer to bull marketing time.  You won't see any fluff today since we are in full summer here...
