Sell him as a show steer, or keep him a bull? New Pic on 8/11/13

Telo has a little extra insight on the pedigree of this bull.  Here are links to both the sire and dams pedigrees for the rest of you. Sire:  http://www.maine-anjou.org/pagedisplay.php?id=298089 Dam:  http://www.acaregistry.org/detail.aspx?reg=345800

Sell him as a show steer, or keep him a bull? New Pic on 8/11/13

So this is an interesting decision to make on this calf.  It is a decision of potential marketability as a low birth weight, polled, high percentage Maine bull, versus steering him and making a very solid show steer.  Nobody is saying he is going to win the next major, nor that he will be the...

What does everyone think of Steerplanet's new online auction service?

Bidding is now underway for the first online sale hosted by Steerplanet.  Looks like several bids have already been placed.  Just wanted everyones opinions so far. We are very excited to be on the calendar to have Steerplanet host the online auction for the Texas Maine Anjou Association in...

Yep!  That would be the place! Boat Club Road.

    Austin cattle

I may have been seeing things, but I swear I saw a Austin Cattle sign by a pasture on the east side of Eagle Mountain Lake in Saginaw, TX.  There were no barns, houses, or cattle, just a sign along the road.  Even more interesting now that there is word that he did, or is moving.  ???

    Clipping Fall Calves for sales

I agree that this is an old wives tale.  I have never noticed calves shucking hair earlier from clipping, but I did have an experience with a northern breeder that slicked the head and neck of the calves before they came down.  That works fine when there is 2-3 more months of winter, but the...

    Opinions on maine cow?

Maineevent - I am pretty sure you have some Montego Bay in your tank.  Montego Bay have a very similar pedigree to I-80.

What do you think of Fort Worth Steer Show?

I know I have already commented on the steer show, but I don't think anything should be taken away from the quality of the show, and the quality of the calves.  Personally I do not feel like the judge was way off base on the cattle that he selected.  Unless you have been to the show, and walked...

    Semen Prices on New Bulls

Disclaimer, we do not do what I am about to say in our operation. If people are out their to raise steers, why pay high dollars for semen on unproven sires when you can buy reasonable priced semen on a proven one, or a clone.  If you get a good one, just call it out of the high priced semen...

What do you think of Fort Worth Steer Show?

The chaos coming into the ring was created by the way the judge was picking the cattle.  The first day was not nearly as bad for people jockeying for position as the second day.  I was working on steers in the first and forth class of the second day of judging.  After watching the just pull 10...

    GVC Hawkeye?

We do not have calves on the ground yet out of Hawkeye, but we are using him on heifers, and in our embryo program.

The bull that wasn't in Denver

I do appreciate all the comments on our bull, both good and bad.  I know any time  you put and animal up on this forum, you are setting yourself up for criticism.  I have seen people ask over and over to see a top bull in their working close, and not all covered up in hair, and fat, and whatever...

The bull that wasn't in Denver

Here is the last video I did in early November when he was almost 14 months. Still not the best quality video. When Ft Worth is done, I may try to get a new one of him. http://www.zntcattle.com/2012/11/taking-pre-orders-for-moves-like-jagger.html?m=1

The bull that wasn't in Denver

Nope, that is an old one that was done in August when he was 11 months old. What you see is what you get when you take pics in August in Texas. I think it was over 100 when that video was done. Just a normal day.

The bull that wasn't in Denver

It sounds like I better redo the video of him if it is making him look unsound. Everyone that has seen him in person have loved him, and have never commented on any structural issues.  I will admit he does not move out as freely as some bulls out there, but I have rarely ever seen a bull with as...

The bull that wasn't in Denver

Thank you to everyone for the complements.  We are very excited about the prospects of MLJ, and think he has a lot to bring to both the Maine Anjou breed, and also the club calf industry.  He brings the mass and bone, yet possesses a pedigree full of fertility, milk, and defect free to produce...

The bull that wasn't in Denver

With all the bull hype going on since Denver.  I thought I would post a couple of pictures of the one that wasn't there.  His name is ZNT Moves Like Jagger.  He is an ET PB Maine bull out of GVC Suh, and the dam of Montego Bay, ZNT Jenna 707T.   I am sure there will be a few criticisms of him...

    How early is too early?

My daughter likes to get a halter on them as soon as they are standing well.  She likes to spoil the ones out of her favorite cows starting day one.  And as Chambero saw this fall, even those 2 month old calves are fair game if she gets bored.  (lol)
