New twist on Shorthorn Show Heifers.

This is a Red Demand x Ace of Diamonds heifer we raised and is being shown to great success by a very talented young man. She was 2nd in a very competitive class at NAILE, and was Reserve Champion today at Scarlet and Gray. I know she's not exactly completely out of left field,  but there's no...

    my jpj shorthorn + herd

I don't usually love JPJ cattle, but LJ knows she can sell any bred heifers or 3 year olds that she doesn't want to a place right up in IL. Stellar cattle.

    Is she worth showing

What is her age,  pedigree, etc? From a first glance and assuming she's a late summer or fall,  I say yes.

    Silveiras Style vs. Colburn Primo

Have you seen him in person? The Nowatzke heifer is many things, but freak necked isnt one of them. I'm not saying Primo will be the next great commercial bull maker,  but for Angus show cattle he is set up to be quite profitable.

    Silveiras Style vs. Colburn Primo

He won't be two until spring,  so I don't think it's even possible for him to be "mature". His sister that the Guyer family showed was maybe the stoutest,  biggest footed Angus heifer I've ever seen.

    Silveiras Style vs. Colburn Primo

Primo doesn't have any babies yet, but with the sheer volume of elite females his mother has produced, I'll be very surprised if he isn't a great breeding bull. I mean, have you seen the Nowatzke and Guyer heifers? Not to mention the June McKinley out of her that just brought 80k We're using...

    Shorthorn question

This is the Red Demand heifer about 10 days before NAILE. Red Reward isn't so easy to come by, but Red Demand, Red Resolve, and Simplify should be easy enough to get.

    Shorthorn question

Yes, yes, and yes. Red Reward, Red Demand, Red Resolve, Simplify, Red Power, and several others. We've got a double registered Shorthorn/Mainetainer showing right now that is extremely competitive. She placed 2nd in a very hard class at NAILE in the open Shorthorn show and will show...

    Coon footed steer

We once had a heifer that we were told was almost too sound to win as a baby, and she didn't do better than reserve division. As a big one, she won her division at Jr nationals, grand champion at state fair, and won her division at both NAILE  and NWSS. Don't sweat it.

    Keeping his rear wheels sound

Another couple things that could help are exercising the heck out of him, and only getting him fat once. If you're done showing him for a while, back him off feed and give him a bunch of hay. Once they get fat, it's tough to keep them sound.

    Keeping his rear wheels sound

Gotta start with a sound one. It's extremely unlikely that you'll improve how he moves dramatically while he's also gaining weight. Lubrisyn is good, and I use rep-gel capsules some before and during shows, but they're not sure bets, and they mostly keep sound ones from getting stiff.

    clone question

Some will have better semen quality but I doby you'd be able to pick out the difference of clone sired calves in a lineup.

Fringe-What are the BWS really like

The ones we had out of 9111 were anywhere from 95-125 lbs, with one at about 80 and one and 140+. I will say that she had similar results with AoD, and that Durbans don't seem to have issues with his BW.

    Oldest bull in the tank

We've got some Cunia that might be useful, but I'm not convinced. The oldest I'd for sure use is the 2 units of Trump that I've got in there. Also have some Sugar Ray, Full Throttle, Ice Pick, and some others from that era that need dumped.

    Leasing a Calf

So the real issue for us when leasing a calf is that she would be one we'd want to keep back. That means that the care and feed would 100% have to be up to our standard. Finding a family that can do that, plus actually get her shown well enough is very difficult, and many of these folks think...
