    Calf sick-Need advice

Take his temp and listen to him breathe. Put him in a chute and put your ear right on his back or ribs if you can do so safely. If he acted that way at my house, I'd assume he still had a little bit of an infection going on, and a tummyache on top of that. Three things I always have on hand...

    Shorthorn bulls for black cows???

Canadian bulls won't make steers. The Bulls you want are all Jakes Proud Jazz and his derivatives. I wouldn't ever use them, but if they have a purpose, it's exactly what you're going for.

    Show Coat

You could probably go to Chris Wilson's place and get some.

    Shorthorn weaning weights.

Lots and lots of looking through rose tinted glasses and projecting going on. How much influence can a single animal 9 generations back really have...

    Show Cattle Ethics

This is attacking you? Hmm. Okay. The show ring is about as far removed now as it ever has been from commercial cattle. Over 150 years of cattle being bred for exhibition. What you're saying is not new. I'm not scared of it because in my part of the world, my show cattle have almost the same...

    Show Cattle Ethics

So is any profession outside of grassfed cow/calf, row crops, and manufacturing good enough for you? Just because something is somewhat niche doesn't mean that it isn't a real profession.

    Show Cattle Ethics

As if the pioneers of showing cattle in the 18th and 19th centuries didn't feed their prize animals anything other than grass. Get a grip. It may seem like a hobby to you, and it is niche, but some people make a very nice living from show cattle. I primarily make my living selling show cattle...

using alfalfa hay for fill on show day

If you read my posts in this very thread, I think you'll find your answers. As far as how fast it works, you can't feed body and width into one in a week. Filling on up is all well and good, but they need to have a good deal of volume before you do the final push.

Or maybe they think a goatee and a shawl is a cool look.

I'd like to know why you liked that bottom bull as well. Doesn't look like something I'd let breed my cows, but I don't breed for western Canadian commercial breeders either.

    Spring of rib

Ultra full isn't going to go directly to the flank. That's not how it works. If you really want to blow her apart behind the shoulders, a hose down her until she's full every day for 45 days will help. But I wouldnt do that.

using alfalfa hay for fill on show day

Also, we start with half a slice of alfalfa or one whole slice of blended. And for fill, just take a couple handfuls at a time until you get there.  It takes some time, but it's usually the best fill you can get in terms of a natural look and for holding that fill.

using alfalfa hay for fill on show day

Now this is interesting. You're saying you don't feed any hay at shows? What's the reasoning for that? How do you get your animals full? Adequate roughage on the road is incredibly important. I'm honestly fascinated by this.

using alfalfa hay for fill on show day

We start about a week out from the show either adding alfalfa to the hay I put out at night or switch over to a blended hay. We feed blended hay at shows almost exclusively.

    Spring of rib

I'd probably get some cottonseed hulls and think about getting some ultra full if you have a Purina dealer near you. I really like precon for young calves, and it does have applications for yearling heifers, but I have had some issues with it.  There is a chance you'll have a hard time getting...

Show Coat - Sure Coat test

It's normal to shuck hair when you start growing new stuff in. I get nervous when I don't get just a few hairs in the comb when I run through them wet in the summer. You're about in that window where you should notice a marked improvement in hair quality. I also advocate using the Dress Coat...

    Spring of rib

Getting her bred will do more good than anything. Ground cobs and ultra full in addition to our already high fiber feed and winning fill have our heifers huge bellied and fresh.

Is she worth the work? Opinions

Vita charge and the freshest alfalfa/grass mix I can find usually does the trick.
