    Show Cattle Ethics

While what you say is absolutely true, it's always funny to me to see grown people who say they are 100% pro free market capitalism start talking about the ethics of it all and then decide that maybe being a greedy SOB isn't the way to go.

Show Coat - Sure Coat test

No, almost no suds. That's how it's supposed to be. There may not be a wrong way to use it, but some ways work way better than others. We put 2-4 ounces in a fogger and fog it in with one blower motor. Then we use a scrub brush to work it in and let it sit for a few minutes. Then we rinse as...

    Shorthorn Junior Nationals

Surly Brewing Co has excellent food and is probably the best brewery in Minnesota. I'll be there and we usually try to eat at local places at least two nights every time we're at a show.

    Show Cattle Ethics

It's probably different with market animals than it is with breeding stock. We don't have that kind of back and forth too much. There are always animals that will be a risk/reward situation, but we're always very conservative when it comes to structure. I'd much rather be beat by a little mass...

I agree Braden. Selection is becoming a lost art.

    Show Cattle Ethics

Was the calf sold with any guarantees? Did the buyer judge this calf to be sound at purchase? What does the vet mean by disorder? Something like spastic paresis or just a straight fronted calf? There are many calves sold for more than $4k that are not sound enough to make it to a fat steer...

Show Coat - Sure Coat test

I think the dramatic hair growth part of it would be more pronounced if I had trouble getting the girls hairy usually. We're showing a June Bloodstone heifer and she's the hairiest heifer we've taken to the Jr National. But she's also been on the summer regimen since April 5 and has had every...

Show Coat - Sure Coat test

I'm not sure that we have just gobs more hair using Show Coat than we did before, but I can guarantee you a couple of things. 1. The hair is way fresher and easier to work using this system. 2.The Volumax soap is beyond compare. 3. The hair comes on quite a bit faster, and comes on more...

    Honest opinion

Get Charlie really tame and spend time on the basics of livestock handling with your step daughter. Have you been feeding him? He looks hungry. He's an attractive calf, but lacks muscle or the power you'd really want in a show calf.

HALTER SCAR WHAT DO I DO?

Basically all you can do is leave the halter off when  you're not working with her. Also, the next time you feel like you need to leave a calf with a halter on overnight, at least do it with a ring halter so it won't stay tight on their face. There's a chance it'll slip off, but it's better...

    Help! Show heifer break in

Cut lengths of pvc or conduit with caps to put over the tposts, I've seen pictures of what happens when a calf jumps and lands on one  without covering.

Who is going to CYT or been

Gross was around 976k, average was just over 5. High seller was 13k for lot 1 I believe. DV Auctions may have the full results.

    Bred heifer in cool room?

Have had dozens of big heifers in coolers with no trouble getting or staying bred. Hair cycles can get messed up though.

Who is going to CYT or been

I plan on being there for sure. If I can't go, I will have several people there looking and could probably get eyes on anything of interest.

    2017 Ft. Worth Steer Judge

Not to mention, structure is clearly not a priority at FWSS. I know it's a market steer show and all...but Houston, KC, and several of the Midwest state fair winners would all have a pretty solid claim as being the best steer in the country.

    Show coat and melatonin

Melatonin will work against the Show Coat. Melatonin implants do work a little better, but the hair has a definite expiration date with melatonin. Wash, dry, and spray in the Show Coat. Work it in good with a comb and scrub brush. Do not blow the Show Coat in. Let the show coat dry under fans...

    Commercial Shorthorn Bull

Our Angus bulls averaged 1390 at 12 Mos actual, and our Shorthorns about 1310. Didn't have enough Angus heifers to make a real average this year, but our shorthorns average around 1175, but their growth tapers off significantly for the next few months while the bulls tend to keep going.

    Show feed question

Because many feed salesmen have never fed a show calf. Cut out the supplements and see what they do. Add in some precon if you need some more roughage in it or if it's too hot.

    Show feed question

The Rowe 49 feed is very very good, but is a little low in protein to use as a creep for me. We've fed a whole bunch of it to calves after weaning though.
