Feeding a commercial calf to show quality questions ????

GOOD POINT!!!  As long as everyone enjoys the project, its a win! Brushing with the scrub brush after washing and when they are dry can help stimulate the hide, grow hair and will help get the hair to "pop" or work the way you want it to.  Are you using any kind of show sheen?  Keeping the hide...

Feeding a commercial calf to show quality questions ????

We tried Glu-coat and had ok luck with it.  The problem we had was getting it mixed in well enough to our feed (we feed Purina Show Chow) and not having clumps of it.  They tended to not like it as much as I expected.  If you are pushing him hard, you might want to look into a feed additive...

Carrier bulls used on commercial cattle

feed grass, I think aj was talking about NH, not AM.  Amazingly, they were able to identify 1680 as the proband animal, which doesn't happen very often.  His parents are both NHF while he is NHC.  Interesting stuff if you ask me.  Crazy how one little thing causes a world of difference.  This is...

    Hot Commodity/ Commotion Shorthorn bulls

The thing I've liked the best about our Hot Commodity's is their desire to get up and go so quickly after being born.  Ours have just kept coming from day 1, gaining weight and filling out.  Have a blue roan baby out of a Cupid (Angus) x Pure Solution cow that I think is going to make a really...

    New Shorthorn reg. papers

The change was due to adding more info on the papers.  I'm not sure what all was added, I think Patrick had an article in the Country about it?

Carrier bulls used on commercial cattle

DL, I agree.  And when we think about how many matings there have been since the Angus cow was bred to the Simmi bull then the heifer calf was bred to a Maine bull, etc etc, I think that while there might be slight the chance, the probability of it is low enough it really isn't a concern...

Carrier bulls used on commercial cattle

Here's a random thought that I came up with while staring at the raining day on a Friday afternoon... How many of the club calf sires do you think have a bit of Angus in them and are carriers of AM, NH or CA?  Just thought... We always think to test our clubbies for TH and PHA but not the...

    Help with Blue Roan Bulls

The genetics of coat colors are really cool!  At least I think so, maybe I"m a major nerd  ;D  There's been a lot of discussion on here about blues and smokes and all sorts of stuff, so if you're really interested in digging deeper, do a quick search on here or Google and you should get a lot of...

    Help with Blue Roan Bulls

Exactly.  One thing to remember though is the chances of getting "spotted" roans vs "true" roans.  Coat color is complex and sometimes white bulls carry spots and can throw splotchy roans.  At least this is my current understanding of all things coat color...  That being said, on purebred Angus...

    Help with Blue Roan Bulls

Assuming the black cow is IRIR at MGF (roan locus) and is EE at MC1R (black/red), a roan bull will give roan calves 50% of the time while a white bull will give roan cows calves 100% of the time.

    TH & PHA Testing

You can do a search for TH and/or PHA on here and you will find probably every bit of information you could ever want on the two, and then some! There are a lot of Maines and Chis as well as crossbred/club calf cattle that have the mutated alleles too.  Some say its bad, some don't mind it.  In...

    Planned C-sections

Really glad people have brought up that the momma brings in 1/2 the genetics AND the environment of the calf.  I think a lot of people forget this very important piece of information sometimes!!  Good luck, I hope it turns out well for you!

Zach I apologize, I didn't even see the top line of you response until after I went back and read it looking for where you apologized.  Funny how we agreed that it was very Jody-ish.  Again, I'm sorry.
