Canadian Western Agribition Prospect Steer & Heifer Show and Sale

Hadn't seen the averages yet, that sure looks good.  I imagine next year will be full right up on steer entries.  I think the high calf prices artificially inflated the real value of alot of the calves.  The heifers were probably as deep and solid a set as has ever been brought out.  Originally...

Keeping Baby Heifers Looking Fresh On A Long Trip

Make the trip as quick as possible - the fewer delays the better.  Assume your headed to a show, get in as soon as they will allow, get them off the trailer get them fed and watered and leave alone as long as you possibly can.  The more time undisturbed the easier the recovery.  10 hours for...

The next Great Angus Sire - BNC Game Changer 1Y

. Its possible that they number the calf the same as the cow.  I'll bet they run more cattle that you do!  Honestly your entitled to your opinions, but that doesn't mean you need to share them.

Who are the Best Clubby Type Bulls that can also make Replacement Females?

Doctor Who.  IMO all the maternal of WMW without the structure issues. Would also agree with All About You, don't have many but the few are pretty good.

Lutalyse failed- anyone else have a similar story?

Yep, couple years back had some bull problems and had a group calving way later than wanted. Sold most of them, kept back five of the best and aborted them, had 2 shots of Estrumate and a bottle of Lute. The 2 that got Estrumate aborted, the lute ones - calved on pasture. One took a CIDR and all...

Anyone else think they've over done Club Calf email blasts?

Thought it was a good idea, until this year.  Didn't check my email for one day and had about 50 of them sitting there, think I've looked at maybe half dozen - most go straight to the trash.  If the online sale guys sent me one a week with there sales for the week I might be more likely to take...

Picture one of your favorite cows.

My latest favourite, a 4 year old Limi x All About You.  She comes from one of those cow families that can raise a good one no matter what way their bred.

    Doctor Who ?

He can really splash the odd one up, had a couple of red and whites out of him.  Don't worry about the colour, just enjoy the fact you got a Dr. Who female - they make cows!

What is in your tank you wish you had never bought ?

Gigolo Joe, did just what a gigolo should do - not get anyone pregnant!  Why I'm keeping the rest I'm not sure. Wedding Crasher - couple decent calves then he comes up THC & PHAC, I could live with the TH but that PHA scares the hell out of me.

    MANCHILD cows

Only have one, bred limi the first year she raised a whale - not very splashy looking but helluva calf for the first time.  This year she had the smallest calf out of cows bred to herd bull, avg. 95lbs hers was 72.  Not a bad looking calf but will be behind for awhile.  She was a twin to another...

    Help!!!!

I've found lute is useless for aborting.  Used it to deliberately abort 3 head that were about 45 days, not a one aborted.  Also had a cow a couple years ago that was supposed to be open, she was on sync program - which included a shot of lute, AI tech stuck his arm in and ooops there was a calf...

    "A rib too long"

From what I was told it was always a weight management issue.  The longer bodied cattle were harder to control for target weight.  Guess I'm like cwbyup62, always liked the longer cattle.  In the steer business I've had to let that personal preference go, but IMO some of these cattle are...

    super cow 143

Pedigree is way down the page on Matt's blog, Naughty Pine x Simm. Looks can be deceiving but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't pay 180,000 for her,  quite sure my banker wouldn't go for that deal either.

    CIDR's

Have reused CIDR's since I started with them.  My best results have always been with the 2nd use of them.  Actually use them 3 times, but have been told that the Canadian ones are "stronger" and our price is closer to $20 each.

    Highliner heifer calf!

Have 1 heifer and 2 steers on the ground from Highliner.  The steers are okay, given they are only a week old, but I already have some concerns with them.  They toe out about as much as I've ever seen on baby calves, they are really stout little buggers though.  Not sure he'll be on my must use...

    Synchronize Estrus for AIing

I've never used anything but the CIDR's with a timed AI, for me its the easiest and cheapest.  You have to have a certain willingness to live with lower conceptions, I've been as low as 55% as high as 80% with an average over 8 years of 69%.  Might just be coincidence but the one year I went...
