***ASK BRAD HOOK A QUESTION THREAD***

Is there any particular breed that you feel has been under utilized in the club calf industry?

    Aluminum stock trailers

Have to agree with RW.  Featherlite's tend not to like gravel roads, one neighbor had two of them and the gravel just seemed to pound out and crack the welds quite regularly.  He went to a Wilson and hasn't had to visit the welding shop yet.  Look how many Wilson liners are on the road, they are...

    Apollo

There was a bit of discussion on here last spring about the Apollo bull, just wondering if any one else has had any and what the results have been like. Have two heifers by him on the ground, one about a week old the other just a day.  They seem to be well designed calves from the belly up...

The Last Straw - Part II

So many to  choose from, my guess is there are some that are gonna be real popular this year and the question will already be asked next year. More specifically I'd love it to be the assembled cast of TH carrier Heatwave sons.

    The Last Straw

I've got one lonely straw of Kool as well - might just as well pitch that one not sure what I'd ever use it on. One of Dr.Who (no longer available in Canada) might try using doing a one straw flush with it. Wedding Crasher - they'll never be lonely, really liked them til found out he was double...

Newbie: Wondering why I don't see any crosses with Limis?

I think the limi deal has gotten a bit of a bad rap that doesn't exactly hold water any more.  I still have people tell me there wild - I'm far less cautious around our limi cows at calving time then them darned angus cows.  Of course all the clubby gene pool is made up of the most docile...

Extremely gifted young man (not exactly cattle related)

Much agreed, it is a pleasure to watch someone who really knows what they are doing around a young horse.  Always admired those who could accomplish with a young horse what you witnessed this young man do.    (thumbsup)

What is the most calves you have heard of from a single sire?

Had a Limousin breeder tell me about one of the first Limi bulls they used, as a mature bull they turned him loose with 80 cows.  He bred them all, not sure about the how long a calving season they would have had.  That discussion arose while discussing the whole testicle development business...

    Open Bar

The Open Bars at Ohlrichs sale were as good of sire group of bulls as I've seen in along time.  Would have been pretty easy to have taken anyone of them home and been happy with them.  The bull in my avatar is an Open Bar from Ohlrichs Denver pen, can't wait to get him home.

What % of calves will sell??

I always look at realistically being able to market 30% as steers.  We used to use the same number when we were selling bulls as well.  If you figure half and half bulls to heifers, its more than half as saleable steers.  Knew a couple purebred outfits that retained very close to all of their...

    nutt n butt business

Haven't seen a pile but from the ones I've seen the real strength is the females, plenty thick enough, lots of middle.  The bulls seem to be a bit dirty fronted and just not quite as eye appealing - still plenty of meat in them though.  Have also been told they are great in the temperament...

    Old Sayings

One of my grandfathers favourites in his younger days was: A farting horse will never tire and a farting mans the man to hire!

Good ole clubby genetics...what a train wreck

Neighbors had a heifer with no tail, she lived the summer in our pasture.  Definitely surprising to see a Char. heifer in with a bunch of blacks then low and behold she was missing parts.  I'm told she still tasted just fine.

    Dakota Classic Results

The Adrenalin females were pretty good set, lots of middle to them, good legs and feet and feminine looks.  The Adrenalin bull was a impressive in his overall make up, personally I'd like to have seen him a touch bigger framed.  Maybe he was big enough for his age but with a birthdate of -...

Dr. Who or Who Made Who?

I like the Dr.Who's better.  Well made and not as many soundness problems.  They will be neat fronted, have seen the odd one that may get a little short necked, but not the freaky fronts that WMW will leave - depending on what the cow is like.  I like the few WMW females I have, but I love my...

Fittin the world one calf at a time. The look back at it all!!!!

Seems to me, well at least up here, alot of the younger guys only want to work on the good ones.  Back when I thought I was pretty good I'd do almost anything that paid, sorry Tarentaise breeders, it just wasn't worth it.  Good thought on the size of the crews as well,  remember dragging out 5...
