    Picking Recipient Cows

My opinion is they should be some of the best maternal cows you own. The cows that have great fertility, mothering ability and produce ample milk. I use some of my best cows to carry embryos and have greater success than just throwing them at junk cows. It’s a huge investment.

2022 Calf crop sires. What are you using?

Obviously we used Sublime really heavy and we’re really happy with the results both from mature cows and heifers. We also used some HIA, Front and Center, Primo, Good as it Gets Fu Man Chu and Dual Threat. First picture is a Sublime out of a Full Flush x Total Play that usually sucks the guts...

Most famous large frame Simmental Donors

I think a phone call to Gib Yardley would be a great place to start. He’s been in the Simmi deal since the beginning. He is very welcoming.

    New Beginning

I think he should be ok with Ms Chill on the bottom side of his pedigree. Jaecke said he could be used on the right first calvers kind of like Databank.

    Cow size

I think it depends on the individual animal. Pelvic size is the major determining factor for us. A 1300 pounder with a little pelvis is harder calving than a 1000 pounder that has an larger pelvic opening. We had one this year we didn’t check and she couldn’t get her 55 pound calf out, she has a...

    TJSC King of Diamonds size/feedback?

A close friend does some work for them and he said he’s right sized around a 5.5. He also said that he is super sound and thick. They also use him on heifers with caution.

Suggestions on best sire to use on a Lock N Load cow?

Hammertime. We kept a bull out of him, we like what he does, keeps or adds a little frame to moderate ones and has ample muscle and a great center body with a nice front. We also used W/C Password of Griswold’s, he’s a full brother to Relentless, but has a little more muscle. Not sure if he will...

    Cattleman's Congress vs. NWSS

I think you’ll see some guys choosing one or the other. With both it would take up nearly a month of time for two shows. My guess is that the Congress will be primarily show cattle and the Western will focus on the commercial guys, but I’m sure will always have a market steer show. Honestly a...

Uno Mas or Fully Loaded Sexed?

We’ve had them both. Both are very good quality. My only knock on our Fully Loaded heifer has been disposition. Not mean, just flighty and pig headed. She broke to tie and leads some, but she’s a handful. Uno Mas will not take anything away from the dam, but don’t expect him to be a herd...

Short of testing him I have no idea if he is homo or hetero black. The shorthorns he was bred to were blues.  One calf is black with white markings and the other is a deep red. I would assume since he had a red calf he is most likely a red carrier or hetero black.

    Sublime

The one shorthorn was an off red color. Dual Threat is a red carrier, I have a red one out of him. Dam and grand dam knock the white off and have always thrown black or smoke.

I did. Our thriller shorthorn and her MAB daughter. Picture of both of them. Black heifer is out of the MAB cow and the reddish one out of her dam. Sold quick, before we even broke them.  We’ve fought mud all year, so excuse the first 18 inches of mud. They were both low birthweight and both...

    Changes to Chianina/Chi registrations

It looks like composite and full Italian breeding. To be a composite purebred it looks like 12.5. % Italian full blood and two generations of registered parents. Full bloods like like they’ll work like the other full blood continental breeds.

    Changes to Chianina/Chi registrations

Anyone else read the proposed changes to the way cattle will be registered and classified in the future?  If I’m reading it correctly they’re going to issue fractions based on percentages and numbers of parents previously registered. And it looks as though they may have two separate herd books...
