    Maternal bulls for clubby cows

I really like our Simmental’s as mothers. Our Uno Mas’s have done great. They come small grow reasonably well and make great mothers with good milk and excellent udder and teat structures. Sexed semen is cheap and available. This year we are breeding some more Hammertime, they’re pretty neat...

Is there a good 50% Shorthorn-50% plus bull out there.

Mark. It seems like the Broker x Shorthorn is magic. Boyert’s have had a few a couple over 100K out of their Tammy cow. Be interested to see how disposition is on them as they get older.

    Maternal bulls for clubby cows

There are so many really good options available.  I think you're headed in the right direction, I think the Angus guys probably know what works best on the Angus cows.  Charlo, Resource, Pokerface, Insight, Northern Improvement, Bismark to name a few would probably make better mother cows that...

    Replacement Heifer

other than the scar from having it repaired you could never tell.  Ohio State did the surgery and we opted to have pins put in to stabilize it.  She was lame on it for about 6 to 8 weeks then was pretty much back to normal.  She was only 3 or 4 months old when it happened, a cow in heat tried to...

    slick shows

Knabe one of your California cohorts has the Chute Side podcast and they have had a great deal of discussion with their guests about slick vs hair shows. Very interesting perspectives. The families that win a lot now will win a lot without hair. It’s not just the haircut, there is so much more...

Best Calving Ease Bulls that still produce competive show cattle.

Mark. He doesn’t have any shorthorn that I’m aware of. He’s out of dual threat, which is an I-80 out of the first Who da Man x Ace of Winegardner’s and his dam is a Maternal Perfection (Whiskey son) Who da Man x Kadabra x Ali x Total Play x Black Jack Simmi. The hair comes from the Kadabra. A...

    Replacement Heifer

Happened to us two years ago. She healed perfectly and just had her first calf. She took all the riding fine and was bred by our mature herd bull. No issues at all.

Best Calving Ease Bulls that still produce competive show cattle.

We have a new one that should be hitting the market fairly soon.  Sublime.  He’ll just be a year old on the first and has been out at Hawkeye for about 6 weeks and is collecting fairly well. Has some performance to him and should make good steers and great heifers. Double clean and 70 lb...

    Wynne In Doubt Bull

We’ve just had the one and we like him. He’s getting gangly now, time to cut him and get ready to wean. Ours came small and exploded, more growthy than most clubby bulls. Tons of hair too.

    Bulls siring larger frames

I'd probably go back a little bit to some more "old school" bulls like Meyer, Maximus, Whiplash, but with the bigger frame size usually you give up some calving ease.  There are some good older Maine bulls like Dirty Harry, Strictly Business and Bad Medicine that'll add from, but suck the guts...

"Meant to Be" Bull and "Duello Icon" Bull

Everyone of them will be different and to use a one size fits all approach will not get you very far.  Honestly evaluate each one and then try to breed to a bull that will correct their faults.  Plus find a type and kind that you like and breed and select for that.  Strict culling will also help...

    Simmental bull meant to be

I'm with Winter Springs on that one.  The Brokers can be pretty big.  I think most are usually over 85 lbs.  The Diamond in the pedigree with help keep that consistently lower, not sure how he got an 11 for CED.  King of Diamonds or Hammertime would be heifer safe, I know Jones has used both on...

    Post freezing morphology

Gargan, if you ever get to Western Ohio, I will try to meet up with you and give you a few units to use.

    Post freezing morphology

Sublime.  He's a 3/8 Maine 12.77% Chi; Dual Threat son.  amaa #508910 and chi#402165.  He's line bred Who da Man with calving ease and some performance plus a shot of Whiskey.  We believe he's the best Dual Threat son so far, but time will tell.  Once we get him back from stud we'll get him...

    Post freezing morphology

We got our first post thaw pass.  We decided to give him a week's rest and he made 70 units at 40 million per unit.  He will stay on the once a week schedule for a while.  In talking with some other's they suggested giving him some more time to store the semen to increase its quality.  Pretty...

    Post freezing morphology

Very possible I am wrong.  He is at Hawkeye, so whatever their standard is.  His is making 40-50 units per collection now

    Post freezing morphology

He's producing almost 5 milliliters and they are putting it in 5 million cells per unit.

    CIDR exposed after insertion

If you have the time and the set up for them, it is usually more effective to palpate them at the same time to ensure the CIDR is near or at the cervix for maximum affect.

    Let's see some new calves!

Mark, I couldn't have asked for a better cow.  We have kept every daughter and they have been phenomenal.  She is nine and just hitting her prime, I wish all my cows looked as good as her, you could honestly clean her up and show her.
